Hey all, im having a strange problem where my laptop does not realized that the lid is closed. The settings are set to Sleep when lid is closed on both battery and plugged-in. However when i close the lid, the monitor stays on, and all the lights remain on. When i open the lid, it does not ask for a password, and it resumes exactly how i left it. Any suggestions???

Did this happen recently or has it been doing so since the beginning?

Hmm. Perhaps a windows update is interfering with the system's core functions. Try reinstalling AlienFX to see if that makes a difference. I don't have a windows 8 PC so I cant tell you if there is another way to check if there is a prompt that confirms a sleep operation in the event of a closed lid

    Hope I helped

I'd be looking at a hardware problem. The screen must have a micro-switch somewhere to detect closure. I have no idea where it is but looking at the hinges should give a clue. It might be just a poor connection?

    Good luck ;)

The screen has a small magnet in it that when it gets close to the palm rest it detects and goes to sleep.

grab a paper clip and move it along the top edge of the lcd till it sticks. Thats the magnet.

But, my guess is its a software issue.

Magnent could be loose/broken. Or whatever sensor is used to sense the magnet may be broken or malfunctioning. Call Dell to have a palm rest and display assembly replacement.

try a system restore to a date before the issue started. If it's not that, the magnet could not be functioning properly.
