    Top of the day peeps!

Got a quick question regarding the 3d 120hz display on the AW17, is that a glossy display or matte?

I believe the 120Hz/3D bundle has a glossy finish over the panel.

I read that on the new models it has anti-glare technology. See: Dell TrueLife™ LCD Screens - What is it?. Dell describe the panel as 'truelife' ;)

Thanks to both of you that replied. I actually prefer it to be glossy since I have a bad experience with matte panels lately being grainy and the smudgy dirty look and glossy solves that issue by having a much vivid and clearer panel.

J.Dre is saying it is glossy like on the m17x r4 and micky Is saying that it is matte w/ truelife but which one it is?

The video I saw on YouTube of someone unboxing the 120Hz 3D bundle had a glossy finish. :D It's not as bad as the M17x R4, though.

Goto 2:28 and start watching the screen.

Kinda both if you read up on it. It is a glossy finish (not matte) but has anti-glare technology. I was checking this out when I was thinking of getting one. Only seen a couple of reviews and they were positive. Glossy screen on this one is it's worst feature but I also prefer glossy for low-light gaming :D

I actually think it's a nice combination of the two. The bundle is definitely not nearly as glossy as the M17x R4...

This is exactly how it is, it's a great combination of both.

Thanks Mr. Fox. I'm curious if this screen is any different than the previous m17x-R3/R4.

Read from post #3 in this thread!

Edit: The R4 introduced 3D Vision 2 with new glasses and a 'lightboost' display. I don't know if AW17 is lightboost?

So could you just replace a the anti glare screen with this one? Also would the 3d function with a 780m, or is there more to it then that. My replacement didn't come with the 3d screen which is fine , but if I can add it later I might think about it.

Yes, you would also need the cable as it plugs into a different MB port. The emitter is built into the assembly.

The 3D should function with any NV GPU that dell supply as standard for a specific model. Otherwise you can still get 120hz but no 3D. You will also have no optimus as the on-board will not be detected by the POST = less battery time.

Having an awesome time in Batman AO in 3D right now, a joy to behold, love it :D

Hi there, others are looking into this, have a look here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-17-m17x/744470-aw17-120hz-screen-2.html.

Dell are a bit weird when it comes to buying parts. They look up your service tag and if the upgrade is not on their list then 'it's not possible' :(. It's got a lot worse since the AW17 (r5) was released. Dell decided to lock down the configs with things like; you can only get the 3D screen with a 780m, and on the M18 you can no longer get it with a single card and add one yourself later.

A lot of complaints at the time since you used to be able to pretty much build whatever you wanted. It's not just a case of screwing more money out of the customers. If they keep the officially supported configs to a minimum then support costs drop correspondingly - and they are more competitive with the prices now from what I saw.

    Good luck ;)
