My AW17 gpu fan has lately been starting up and running at full blast non stop. I have a feeling that it's the gpu causing the issue. It's an 7970m and when the fan starts spinning it's mostly cold air coming from it.

That might be an easy one. Open the back, remove the fan on the right and get the rats nest you see out from under there. A can of compressed air helps a lot.

    Good luck.

It's not dirty at all, out of nowhere the gpu fan just starts spinning non stop.

Hmm, sorry not any help then, never come across that :(. You could try HWInfo to control it, but that won't fix whatever is causing it.

You're never going to get fan control out of Dell. Been through that mill including an open conference call with them.

They will not admit it but it comes back to my boring theory. Changing fan profiles changes the thermal characteristics. Not allowed for regulatory reasons.

    I had the same problem!
I have an M17x R4, with NVidia 680M. Every time after start up ~5 minutes, the computer would freeze for 2 seconds, then the GPU fan would spin at it's highest out of nowhere, even if the gpu temp is 34C!
And then the computer would run just fine?!?!
I noticed that Alien ware autopsy was updated automatically. Didn't have this issue before the update.
I rolled back to a previous version, and everything is fine.

Sadly I think it fried my GPU, it's not performing how it used to and the fan barely makes a sound anymore even while playing games. The card still shows but I also don't get the same fps as I used to before, Also if I switch to discreet graphics mode to run on the gpu my computer goes blank and gives me 8 beeps. :(

THANK YOU!!! Thank you for making this thread I have this exact same issue. time to do some digging in the link posted in here.

EDIT: So far after disabling the services for the new SupportAssist software I have had 0 startup issues. All seems well now until they release the new bios update

Glad it helped. So it seems my 7970M is alive and sort of working... I've been checking on hwinfo and see that my GPU fan speed doesn't go beyond 35% which is why i think my games may be crashing. This is all started happening after the whole Dell support assist program started making the fan go crazy. http://puu.sh/fY4qz/3521dee5fd.jpg
