Removing the CMOS does absolutly nothing to the Alienware 17 due to the nvram bios. Do not remove it because it is redundant .. It does and will do nothing to your system. On rare occasion the system may detect that it is not inserted but the exact steps for this have yet to arise.

You have to remove the memory as well, from what I remember.

Again this sometimes works, not always. But yes after removing almost all my components "one time" when out of luck I was able to the get a CMOS failure Induced to wake from failed overclock settings.

ive read your other post on this subject, and gave me much hope at time, but nothing yet has worked. Oc'd using intel extreme utility, and it was a bad oc, and restarted but didnt post, and been that way every since. I thought i could reflash the bios, that was another failure because the machine wont read the usb drives until it passes the power on self test. I even tried holding down different buttons while turning it on, and that did nothing. So i removed the ram, and i get beeps, i remove the cpu and i get beeps. There has got to be a way to correct this plz plz plz

There is another way, but it's pricey. What fixes it 100% is getting a 4700MQ CPU from eBay and putting it in your computer. It will reset all pc settings. Then you can post. Once in bios however you need to then reset to default settings. Usually when I "bought" the CPU from ebay I just returned it when done with it .. I'm quite sneaky like that .. I've bought the 4700MQ twice off ebay lol .. But yes this is the only sure way to do it.

Edit* if you need more exact information I can message you my personal cell and I can give you a call. It's a really dumb problem. Just don't panic.

It's not necessary to put in a 4700MQ to induce the CMOS error to reset the BIOS. Refer to this thread on the AW 18 subforum: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-18-m18x/744099-reset-bios-alienware-18-a.html#post9550731, which has multiple links on how to reset the BIOS. A few of those were started by me.

You remove the CMOS battery, remove the CPU/RAM, let the machine beep until it reboots, then turn it off and turn it on again. If it beeps 5x you can put the CMOS battery and CPU/RAM back, and the machine should boot. If not rinse and repeat till you get 5x beep.

The guy above is right, the USB port seems to be off until after the POST. If the machine wouldn't POST, then the USB ports won't work. Also, there're settings in XTU that one should never touch. One should be careful with setting negative core voltage offset. One should never set a negative cache voltage offset on AW machines (this will brick the machine after a reboot). One should also leave the digital and analog IO voltages untouched.

As I said I tried the ram and cpu removal, no luck with that. I let her beep for a good hour didn't induce a CMOS failure. Only sure fire way in my 3 or was it 4? Intel XTU mishaps was to do the CPU swap. Which fixes it in 15 seconds. But when I have another one of the errors I'll try this ram trick again .. Maybe the new bios allows this to work ;). But personally removing ram and CPU didn't work.. To induce my first ever CMOS failure was to remove every single component as to where it could only beep .. And eventually 5min it has a CMOS failure beep code.
