    Hello there,

I'll be receiving my new alienware 17 tomorrow and I've just read about the problems with gtx880m.

    My machine specs are
    4710mq
    gtx880m 8gb
    16gb ram
    1tb 5400rpm + 64gb msata caching

Is the overheating, throttling issue have been solved?

PS: Just an ordinary gamer who likes to game. I won't be overclocking the card, but I don't like to see the card temperature strike over 80 celsius when gaming ( dota2, payday2, thief 4, tombraider). Will the card throttle if I play these games in ultra setting?

Is there any vbios that is stable with gtx880m?

I have the same laptop as you, I've experienced non of the problems that the forums are full of. My 880m runs awesome only game it gets hot in is witcher 2 and never throttles on that game either. Most of the guys who are having problems with the 880m are the ones that put that card in an older gen laptop from what I've seen. I'd avoid the forums and just game with that beast and see if you have any problems.

Usually a re-paste with some good thermal compound will mask the issues of the 880M. If you're not into overclocking or benchmarking, it's not a big deal. Just enjoy it.

Agreed! Just enjoy it it runs all games great. Arma 3 and Dayz run epic. And now that they released new bios for oc level 1 on cpu that helps even more

Do you mind telling us what you use for paste on your cpu and gpu. Do you use same for both.and maybe a link to where to buy it.that would be great. I want to paste my cpu but not quite sure what to use.thanks

I use IC Diamond. It's not only the paste, but how you use it.

You can have the best thermal compound in the world but apply it poorly and have bad results.

Thanks I ordered some ic diamond from amazon and going to give it a go on my cpu.. my 770m runs on average 70c with slight overclock all day long.but my 4800mq runs at 85 average and sometimes 90 or 91. It probably will be ok but he I gotta learn to do it sooner or later right.
Guys with the alienware 17 with 880m that repaste their gpus how did it work out for you guys.

Just got my alienware 17, bad news... the gpu 880m run over 93 Celsius when I use MSI kombustor to stress test. What would you guys suggest me to do besides than repaste? Definitely will repaste it after I get back from vacation. I tried to update the BIOS to the latest A14(Oct 9) but I don't think it helps though.

Uh play games and see what your temps are. Who cares about synthetic benchmarks especially Msi kombuster of course your temps will be high with that app. Now if your temps are that high playing games then I'd be worried

I tried to play Tomb Raider in ultimate setting and it strikes up above 94 degree celsius which is unacceptable! I'm using 332.7 stock vbios. Haven't tried the repaste as I couldn't get one atm. Besides that, my cpu temperature is high as well. It hovers around 55-65 celcius in idle, gaming around 75-79 celcius.

Run the fans manually with HWINFO64 under heavy use, until you have applied new thermalgrease. If not, call Dell for a fix.

I think what they'll offer for me is to change the cpu and gpu fan and I don't think that will fix the problem though. What do you think? :D

Completely ridiculous. Either a new heatsink or a new thermal grase. This fix as they do come and be a total failure. If they take off the heatsink on the CPU for example applying a new thermalgrease you must follow closely with what they do. or you can risk this: :mad2:

    View attachment 116674

It was much better when I installed a new heatsink and applied new thermalgrese (Liquid Ultra) in agreement with Dell. :D

It depends on what thermalgrease that will be used and how high the temperature was. The difference between Dell's contracted technician miserable job and my application of Liquid Ultra thermalgrease, was 16 to 18 degrees Celsius under load.Under Cinebench 11.5 test, then the overclocked CPU temp is about 86 degrees Celsius and firestrike and 3dmark 11 test 74degrees celsius :D

That sounds amazing. I wish I can resolve this issue once I got the Arctic Silver 5 or IC Diamond. I'll do it by myself though. Wish me luck :D

How exactly did you apply this? As i have redone mine in past and honestly didnt see a drastic change. Did you just apply one thin line or did you do a central circle application onto the heat sink?

you just apply one thin line. I always warm up the thermal grease wrapped in a bag and fill up a cup with 55 degree hot water that I put the bag inside. This is so that the thermal grease becomes softer and easier and squeeze out with the pressure of the heatsink. Remember that I use Liquid Ultra, which is the best thermalgrease sold as of today.

IC Diamond run out of stock now at my place. Its extremely hard to find IC Diamond at my place :( Currently only Arctic Silver 5 left. Yeah I tried to use Cooler Master repasted before this but no luck as well. How did you apply it? I applied central circle and then spread it over the entire chip but doesn't see any change as well :(

Edit: Got it thanks. Well I don't think I can find a liquid ultra at my place as well :(

If you can get Gelid extreme, this is one of the best thermal grease with the same quality as IC Diamond

I ordered liquid ultra and I'll get it on Monday. Cheers, and hope can get the better temperature.

Is IC Diamond > liquid ultra? IC Diamond takes a month to restock from the reseller here...

Liquid Ultra is the world's best thermal grease without doubt for a laptop processor. Use only the best thermal grease when it comes to a Laptop cpu, as it does not have as good cooling as a desktop pc

Edit: Follow all manuals and videos on the Internet before applying Liquid Ultra, as it may damage the processor, heatsink and motherboard if you spill with this paste. Good Luck !

The CPU is prone to much higher temperatures. So, Liquid Ultra will help you with the CPU. However, it has been proven that IC Diamond and Liquid Ultra have no discernible difference when applied to mobile GPU's because they do not reach such high temperatures under load. I've got a bunch of IC Diamond laying around, so I'll be using that until it runs out. But I would also recommend Liquid Ultra, if you're comfortable with re-pasting your system and plan to do more than game (i.e. overclocking or benchmarking).

In my opinion, everyone who purchases an Alienware should re-paste as soon as they get done testing to make sure their system is fully functional from the factory. The Alienware paste is not designed for optimizing temperatures, it's designed to last a long time and keep temperatures below the maximum. That's not ideal for gaming.

Hm... then what if I use Arctic silver 5 to paste on my GPU and liquid ultra on my CPU, is that best choice? ( IC Diamond no stock here atm) :( only arctic 5 and liquid ultra

    Totally agree.
There should have been a stronger attachment mechanism that has allowed a higher pressure from the heatsink on the processor. :D

There is a big difference in the heat with the use of Liquid Ultra vs other good thermal grease if you are overclocking or benchmarking. At some high overclocking is the only Liquid Ultra which is good enough cooling paste. :D

How careful do you mean? Just apply a central circle and cover the heatsink back? or should I spread it?

Hello I'm back and I have a good news here. I applied Liquid Ultra thermal paste on my CPU and GPU. GPU temperature were hovering at the maximum of 79 Celsius, CPU hovering mid 60s. The GPU was at 95 Celsius before paste and CPU was at high 70s. This paste is just so amazing and super easy to apply. Cheers:thumbsup:
