This year we launched a new feature on our M17x R3 and M18x notebooks and we have some questions regarding HDMI-in. We hope you have a chance to provide your insights.

    1. Are you aware that there is an HDMI-in port built into the M17x R3?

    2. If so, how often do you use this feature?

    3. What type of device do you use this with, primarily? (Smart Phone, Console, Digital Camera etc.)

    Thank you!

    Stickies always welcome :)

    1. I was aware of the port and find it is a valuable addition to both of these machines.

    2. My son has used the port for his xb0x 360 several times. I am also looking forward to seeing if my PS3 will work in 3D mode into my R3 3D.

    3. I had not thought of trying to use it with my camera. It does have an HDMI out on the camera. I will have to try it. I will also be trying my PS 3 with it and if I get a phone with HDMI out I will try it. (Present phone doesnt have it)

For the record I have an M17x R3 3D with a 460 (wish it was a 580) and my son recently purchased an M18x with dual 580s.

Any other questions feel free to PM me.

    1. Are you aware that there is an HDMI-in port built into the M17x R3?

Yes, this is what sold me over the HP Envy 17 and Asus G73.

    2. If so, how often do you use this feature?

Being military, I use is quite often when deployed.

    3. What type of device do you use this with, primarily? (Smart Phone, Console, Digital Camera etc.)

    Game consoles.

It is very nice to see Alienware innovating with these features, niche products demand niche features!

    1. Are you aware that there is an HDMI-in port built into the M17x R3?

    Yes.

    2. If so, how often do you use this feature?

I own an R2 so I don't have this feature but I -would- use it several times a week if I had it. I'm hoping this option sticks around through subsequent models so I can take advantage of it when I'm ready for put down money for a hardware refresh.

    3. What type of device do you use this with, primarily? (Smart Phone, Console, Digital Camera etc.)

Consoles and desktop PCs for troubleshooting.

    1. Are you aware that there is an HDMI-in port built into the M17x R3?

    Yes.

    2. If so, how often do you use this feature?

    Not much at all really...

    3. What type of device do you use this with, primarily? (Smart Phone, Console, Digital Camera etc.)

Desktop PC's Troubleshooting, TV Tuners and for Digital Cameras.

Extra Comment: This is really an innovate feature that is very useful but as a power-user, I am still inclined to see IEEE 1398 FireWire and ExpressCard Slot over it though as I tend to use those over HDMI-In.

    - Never

    3. What type of device do you use this with, primarily? (Smart Phone, Console, Digital Camera etc.)

seems like an awesome feature, even though I don't use it. I would most likely consider it for desktop troubleshooting if I were to.

    1. Yes

    2. I own an R2, not a M18x or an R3.

    3. I would mostly use it for troubleshooting desktops, or with my consoles. It would have been especially nice as I moved recently and for two months the moving company has delayed delivery of my stuff, including my television (my consoles and M17x came with me in the car, naturally).

This actually put the Alienware on top of my list. I can't tie up a TV for the occasional xBox360 use.

    1. Yes, I'm aware of the port.

    2. Haven't really used it yet since getting the laptop except to test it out initially to make sure it was working.

    3. If I were to use it I suppose I might use it for a gaming console, maybe a camera.

    1. Yes

    2. Every one or two days

    3. As a stand alone monitor for my desktop. If 3D works with HDMI in, may use it with PS 3 and 360. got 3D games no 3D screen... donno if this works yet.

Another M17X R2 user who doesn't have the port but would love to have it in my future AW laptop (probably M18X R2).

    1. Yes
    2. I would use it at least twice a week
    3. I would use it for XBox 360, desktops, anything else I could think of to plug it in to.

Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you will get a lot of valuable information and feedback from many of the AW owners on this site.

Very often, whenever I want to play my PS3 (I'm on vacation away from my home btw)

    1. Are you aware that there is an HDMI-in port built into the M17x R3?
yes, one of my main reasons for R3 as opposing ot R2 (if not the only one)
    2. If so, how often do you use this feature?
Depends on my location, if my devices are with me, daily
    3. What type of device do you use this with, primarily? (Smart Phone, Console, Digital Camera etc.)
    Xbox 360 (!), Digital camera

TIP for you guys: there is one EXTREMELY annoying thing with HDMI-in - when you use it for long time and do not interact with the laptop itself, monitor dims or turns off (power saving) and so you could guess what happens to the experience... I COULD mess with power saving options, but if I do that each time when I have to plug into HDMI-in, would be too much time consuming, therefore I think there has to be a special power option for HDMI-In usage.

Q: Are you aware that there is an HDMI-in port built into the M17x R3?
A: Yup, and I love it*

Q: If so, how often do you use this feature?
A: Whenever I didn't want to carry my tv with me. :p About 3x's a week.

Q: What type of device do you use this with, primarily?
A: Xbox, PS3, and pretty much anything else.

*Notice the "love". I don't even update my GPU drivers because of the practicallity of the HDMI-IN. I lost that feature and rolled back the driver. Please make a driver update for us.

    1. H@@l Yes!

    2. Daily when traveling with my work Macbook Pro

    3. Connecting Macbook Pro to use the AW as an external display. I need 2 monitors for work and this an awesome way to get another screen while on the road.

This feature plus e-SATA made the Alienware my only choice for a new gaming laptop.

    Cheers,
