The M17x R3 can't change the colour for the alien head on the lid like the M17x and M17x R2.
The alien head on the M17x R3 lights up using the screen back light

Why would they do something like that for r3 when every other model is enabled to do it?

The reason I heard was that the 900p screen has just a bit of white plastic on the back to transfer the light while the 1080p screen has a proper panel that "could" change color if permitted. However to keep all r3's the same they made them all display only white.
