I've researched gaming laptops for a while now and it seems that most people believe Alienware/Dell is extremely unreliable and not worth the money. The only reasons I'm interested in the M17X or perhaps the M14X is for the performance and the design. However, I don't want to spend over two grand on a laptop that is constantly going to give me trouble. So, based on your experiences, would you say Alienware laptops are worth it or too much trouble for the price?

Also, why would Alienware announce new laptops with Sandy Bridge like 4 days before Ivy Bridge??? Silent upgrade perhaps?

I've had mine for 8 months+. No problems to speak of yet. I think the performance is impressive. I always thought the idea of a gaming laptop was silly... but now I see that they actually have the power to be viable.

If I were to buy all over again I would probably seriously consider an m18x because of the extra gpu. That is the most important factor for me though size and portability can be of interest when buying a laptop. To each their own.

I absolutely love my m17x, I have had it almost two years and I bought it second hand and spent less than 1300 on it initially. since then i have upgraded the cpu, ram, and hard drives.... and the video cards...sort of... I havent had any trouble with mine and recommend alienware to everyone I know.

"Extremely Unreliable" I dont think so. Imo Alienware has one of the best warranty in terms on how they honor it, and many people dont realize that. I also want to say that there are lot of hate on alienware because they judge it on the price and havent owned or seen one and they assume its a over priced pos dell or they got an alienware and dont even know what they are doing and they said it broke, that is where the baised judgement begin that alienware is unrealiable and overpriced and etc... I used to be an Asus G series user i had the g50vt and g72gx and overall good too but i wanted something different and moved to alienware and loved it since. Lastly if you search in forums ofcourse you will see more people posting about probelms it may make you back off but remember its a forum they need help and thats 1 thing why we have these forums.May I know what is the other brand of laptop you are considered buying?

I've been the owner of my R2 since December, minus a few BSOD with ATI CCC, no issues really.

Thanks for clarifying, man. It really makes me feel better about my possible purchase. As for other brands, I was considering the new Asus G55/G75 as they look pretty nice and will be using Ivy Bridge and 660/670M. I looked at Clevo resellers like Origin but I really don't like the case (feels crappy IMO). I also saw the MSI GT60/70 that are pretty cool but again I don't really like the case design so much. And I also saw that Samsung Series 7 Gamer laptop that looks alright. Aside from those, I'm still considering getting a new Macbook Pro 15" when they come out with Ivy Bridge (assuming it has a GT 650m like the M14x). Oh and I saw Razer's laptop but it's way too expensive for old hardware.

So yeah I've seen pretty much everything that's going to be on the market. I'm really juggling between an Alienware/Asus or a Macbook Pro that would be relatively suitable for gaming.

Also, whatever laptop I buy would be used for gaming, music production, video editing, and possibly some 3D modelling and coding. I'm primarily a gamer but I'm also getting into the production aspect of such multimedia.

Insidiouz, one other thing to consider, the Alienware has the best cooling that money can buy. I own an Asus G73 which is also pretty good as far as the cooling solution, but this is better

When i opened up the box for the first time after it was delivered, i had that unstoppable laugh. The first thing that came to mind was they spared no expense.

As far as i'm concerned, the Alienware is the best money can buy. And as cartman said, service is great, you get next day in your home service which no other laptop manufacturer offers

I was in the same boat, I went with the Dell Precision M6600 with the AMD FirePro 8900 card. It scores a 7.5 on the WEI for gaming and business graphics. It has available IPS screen and docking station.

Alienware has been great for me so far. Other than a few minor mishaps, its been smooth sailing for me. ;)
