Hi everyone, I'm new here and need some help. I have an alienware m17x that was manufactured in mid 2009 and that's when I bought it and it came with the standard 2 x 2gb memory installed and I've used this laptop maybe 30 hours in the past 5 years and I went ahead and went onto dell.com to look at my memory upgrade options and I can only go up to 8gb on this system. So I ordered 2 x 4gb dell certified memory modules and received them and installed them several times now and this is what happens when I turn it on, the screen stays black/blank and the fan and keyboard lights turn on and the 'Caps'' light starts to blink non-stop and the 'Num' light stays on solid with the other lights and so what I did was I installed one 4gb card and one old 2gb card and then the computer boots up with no problem and shows 6gb memory in the system control panel. And what I've noticed is that Slot 1 will recognize the 4gb cards but Slot 2 will not recognize the 4gb cards but both slots recognize the 2gb cards..... Can anyone help or explain what's going on here and thank you

What speed (Hz) do you have on both of those RAM sticks?
Also, which operating system are you running on? (Vista or Win 7)

Hi and thanks for the reply, I upgraded to Windows 7 in 2010 from Vista and after entering my tag number on dell.com it showed me my system and upgrade options for the memory and I'm not sure what (Hz) it is but here is the info from the cards and the packaging as follows --- Dell (snpfyhv1c/4g) (4GB 2rx8 pc3 12800s - 11 - 11 - f3) and then (m471b-cko ------- 1317) and then ( 99LO358-001.A00LF) (P1047168-0484256) and I updated my bios last month

Do you mind taking a picture of the actual RAM sticks?

Hi and thanks for the reply, problem is solved finely. I took the laptop to USA computer service with the new memory modules and after inspecting it they found the new modules were the wrong size and they were 12800 and the mother board could only take 10600 and so dell's website under my tag number gives the wrong memory upgrade for my system. Thanks for the help
