I think you can only overclock the 920xm or 940xm in bios....the rest of the cpu's arent overclockable in the system bios by default. Thats what makes the extreme cpu's "extreme".....

I was under the impression that any cpu other than an extreme cpu (in the M17x R2 anyway afaik) was not overclockable in bios. Ive checked mine which is an 840qm and same thing...although you can alter vcore i think, as for OC, its a no go in bios.

There are ways to OC a non extreme cpu .... lots of people use SetFSB to do so....dunno what cpu the OP has or what M17x but im just going on my own knowledge and experience.

If the OP has an extreme cpu, that can be OC'd and also would suggest using UncleWebb's ThrottleStop program to unleash even more power.....simple google searches can produce good results/info.

So basically , you have an Intel Core I7 820qm right? - R1 or R2? - you should be able to overclock it using SetFSB...plenty of info on it here on NBR ang google.

    Have a read of this:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/495203-how-oc-m17x-r2-using-setfsb.html

As always, Overclock at your own risk - if you dont know how or dont feel comfortable - i wouldnt mess about as you could do more damage than good.

you can't get to it from bios? is that a R2 problem or is it just not working? my Q9000 quard core (not extreme) can overclock in bios. im on an R1 up to 2.4 ghz from 2.0 just fine from bios. you have to go from auto to unlinked, if you have that option under overclocking.
