    Hi all

my laptop recently had an accident lol, where the top of the glass on the screen had cracked and a piece broke off. I want to replace the glass but have seen it is somewhat time consuming.

What i want to do is buy a complete display unit so i can fit it and repair the old screen at a steady pace but obviously still being able to use my laptop

I have found a screen on ebay and it says its for an M17x R2 laptop, but i had seen somewhere that it would actually work with my M17x R1 without any problems. I just want to check if this is correct.

Here is the link of the ebay auction i found

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alienware-M17x-R2-Display-Screen-Dual-CCFL-1440-900-900p-/331516710437

Here are some pics of my laptop display

    Thanks for the help

You can mount an m17x r2 screen without any problem but be carefull with the ribbon. What type of screen do you have actually ? If you want to put in an RGB Led 1920*1200 you have to use a different ribbon from the ccfl 1440*900 one.

Yep, you have to buy an other RGB led one, the ccfl one use a different ribbon and it's a very bad downgrade, the rgb led is an amazing screen !

The french listing? That would work, but doesn't mention whether it's 1200p or merely 900p. The protective finish is also rather damaged.

Look ... not sure what you're talking about with ' changing the glass' ... sounds like something dope-dealers do ... Let's make sure we're using the same terminology:

Furthermore; neither your panel nor any other posted so far is an "RGB Led" as that would presume is doesn't have a CCFL as a backlight, but uses LED technology instead (it's either one or the other; examples). You cannot use a LED backlight in a CCFL system without an adapter compatible with the lcd you want and the motherboard connector (cannot use 8-bit colour lcd on a system that outputs 6-bit only).

If you want the same panel then find another LTN170CT11-G01 (the 900p is the image above). Note that the specifications of your 1200p say ' 2x CCFL', that's because is has two fluorescent tubes for the backlight instead of the single one for the 900p. You should see two red+white cables exiting the backlight inverter on the back of your display (single one would give too uneven an image).

Now, if " changing the glass" = " changing the lcd"; that's not much more work than exchanging the entire assembly. Only need to detach the lcd cable and either four, six or eight screws (side of the panel) and the lcd can be lifted from the lid and swapped. Benefit is that you can get a perfect panel, rather than settle for whatever random piece they throw in a refurbished assembly. This is, of course, assuming that only the lcd is damaged and the lid is fine otherwise.

That'll be fine; good price, condition seems decent enough and it's the least amount of work  . Be aware that ' no dead pixels' ≠ ' no stuck pixels', though on such a high resolution screen it isn't quite as noticeable.

thanks. But im not sure i understand when you say "Be aware that ' no dead pixels' ≠ ' no stuck pixels', though on such a high resolution screen it isn't quite as noticeable"

There are no dead pixels which is good, so why do i need to worry about it?

Dead means no colour whatsoever, so no red, green or blue (it'll be black full-time). Stuck means it displays only red, green or blue, but can never change from one colour to another. Since the listing doesn't specify ' no stuck pixels' there is a chance that it, indeed, has stuck pixels. But even if this is so, you likely won't notice it unless you look for them (using display patterns, for instance). No worries  .

It's a Samsung (LTN), other than that; sticker is partially obscured. Could be any of these 33 panels and the R2 came with RGB LED panel or CCFL option. You need the CCFL version, so ask seller if he can make out the sticker in the 4th or 5th picture.

Yes, unfortunately it won't work. Just thought of this for searching without a panel id; an RGB led has a separate 20-pin cable and this is visible from the back of the panel:

DAMN! im having a nightmare with finding a screen. My one works perfectly but the top of the glass/bezel was damaged and it drives me crazy everytime i use it lol. I may end up going down the road of buying new glass and replacing it. But i have seen how difficult it is to do!

Correct, and the first one would fit, but is WXGA+/900p.
