I've got a mid-2009 Alienware M17x R1 and both hard drives are dead. The original WD hard drive died about a month ago and a hard drive installed back in 2011 died last night. Since the laptop is getting a bit old and I'm not particularly interested in getting a new one at the moment, I was hoping to boost the laptop's performance with an SSD as a drive for the OS and an HDD as a storage drive. Would this combo work in an M17x R1? If so, is there a limit to the SATA the M17x R1 can handle for an SSD? What capacity SSD should I get? I was thinking of getting a 120gb SSD since I've read that Windows 7 64-bit requires 20gbs, but I've also read that a 240gb is the recommended capacity, especially for gaming. Lastly, any recommendations for an SSD and/or HDD 750gb-1TB? I'm looking to spend under $200 total for this repair/upgrade if it's possible.

The m17x can work with these set ups:
    Up to 2 SATAII HDDs
500GB SATA HDD at 7200 RPM
    [Single Drive Configuration]

128 and 256GB Solid State HDD
    [Single Drive Configuration]

    As far as pricing information.
I can suggest the Dell store or newegg.
