    hi all
i have just purchase a alienware m17x whit this specs:
    i7 740
    8gb ram
    crossfire ATI 5870
    640gb hdd (2x320gb in raid0)

i have been looking at some of all the posts and it sounds like there is a lot of trouble whit them. so would i be stupid to think that Dell have sorted all those problems by know or will i get a lot of problems as sons as i get my laptop?

i've had an r1 and now an r2 .. there are issues associated with both of them .. overall the known issues with r2 can be worked around, r1 has stutter issue which was really annoying. r3 imho will have just as many issues, other high end laptops also have issues no matter what u get imho. apparently r3 is just around the corner, i would wait for that.. but thats just me.

Are you talking about stuff like the battery not charging, or games not working too well? The gaming issues seem to be crossfire related. There are crossfire problems with Sager laptops as well, so this is probably an AMD issue, not a Dell issue. I'm about ready to pull the trigger on an m17x r2, and am thinking about paying the extra $50 for Nvidia cards for peace of mind. Though i won't get too much peace since the Nvidia cards run hotter.

it sounds a bit like you dont have anything else than trouble both whit the battery and prober driver so every thing works so you can game on it?

I imagine that by now nVidia will have sorted out their chip problems, but the fact that they tend to be hot and nVidia went through those major bad-GPU issues makes me a little squeamish. But then Seagate went through big firmware issues that destroyed many drives, and they fixed them and are back to making good stuff, and they are still a Dell OEM. Who knows? But an absolutely perfect laptop is not to be had, no matter what.
