My m17x-r2 has worked flawlessly for the 2.5 years I've had it, except the gpu fan (single gpu setup) which I've had to replace a few times as it started to make a light rattle - annoying noise that I will not accept with such a pricey laptop. It's now happened again and I'm getting in touch with Dell to get a replacement fan. I'm now actually of a mind to buy 2 or 3 so I'll have a spare stock, but it seems a bit silly. So my question to you experts is if there are any alternatives to the Dell fans, any 3rd party product that is more reliable but still fully compatible with my laptop (and by that I mean that it will rev up and down properly etc)?

Never found a 3rd party replacement to that fan. I'm on my third GPU fan as well. I am not sure how or why that fan decided to imbalance and destroy itself, but it does. Lubricating it as Matthew said will help, but if y'all are one to do a lot of gaming, then the GPU is spinning at full RPMs and is therefore getting more wear and tear. Just be sure to clean all the fan blades when you lubricate it. Any significant amount of dust on there can throw off the fan balance as well and cause the rattling noise.

Naw. I don't game much (or at all) on my R2. I do A LOT of video transcoding on it though and AMD AVT has always been a big help in speeding up the process. But sadly, my 5870m card is terminal. It has been on the verge of dying for some time now so I haven't been stressing it. I am still waiting for the 680m to come back into stock with Alienware so I can order a new one.

I don´t think there is any 3rd party one compatible. If you need a replacement fan you can send us an e-mail to [email protected] :)

If your laptop is no longer under warranty, here is what you need to look for to replace your GPU and/or CPU fans:

Right hand side GPU (laptop's left side) Fan:
    KSB0705HA-8J02 - Delta Electronics KSB0705HA-8J02 Cooling Fan
    or
    BATA0812R5H P002 - http://www.pchub.com/uph/laptop/88-54070-16153/AVC-BATA0812R5H -Cooling-Fan-.html

Left hand side GPU (laptop's right side) Fan:
    KSB0705HA - Delta Electronics KSB0705HA Cooling Fan
    or
    BATA0812R5H P001 - AVC BATA0812R5H Cooling Fan

    System(CPU) Fan:
    BATA1015R5H - AVC BATA1015R5H Cooling Fan

Fan speed is controlled by the Embedded Controller.

Hi Katalin, was just wondering if you (or anyone else) could confirm for me which fan is which. I am currently having issues with the GPU fan in my R2 (I only have one GPU in mine) and it is on the top left hand side of the laptop (so basically under the ESC key) when the laptop is being used, which fan would I get to replace it??

    Cheers

Those fans don't really require lubrimatcation. If you were to do that, you would need to use Dielectric grease, and only a small amount at best.

I'm also looking for some details on replacing a fan or both on a M14X OR M15. It's a friends son's and he's always on it. I could use some cleaning too since he plays it while laying on his bed. Could that cause overheating?
