Ok so i posted awhile back on here. I have an alienware m17x r2 with the model K1NFP lcd screen. 1920x1200 RGB screen. The screen would work when i would boot up but usually go black after about 3-5 minutes of use. Sometimes it would just go black, sometimes it would make crazy lines and just get all messy then go black. Sometimes it would fade from the middle to the edges from white to purple/black then just go black. However on the very bottom of the screen there is a slight line of light along the whole bottom, as if the image is stuck there or something. I'm gonna try to make a video so you can see what im talking about. An external display when hooked up works fine, never had an issue once with it. So that makes me think it wouldn't be the gpu, but im no expert i could be wrong you tell me. So i ordered a used lcd model J2CY8 1920x1200 off ebay, a slight upgrade. I ordered the whole top part of the r2 laptop so not just the lcd as i wouldnt feel totally comfortable replacing just the lcd. So it came with all the video cables/wires everything. basically this
Well it is still doing the same thing. Works for 3-5 minutes, sometimes ten or more then craps out. So what else can it be, it would have to be something inside the laptop not the screen assembly i am thinking. Could it still be the GPU or an inverter? i know nothing about inverters or such. Also could it be a power issue? My gpu is ati radeon mobility 5870 if that helps. I'm really disappointed as i spent all that money and still didn't fix the problem, i figure that should atleast narrow it down now though. Please help me if you can or have any ideas. Thank you.
Sorry if i cant link to ebay on the forums just let me know and ill edit my post.

Checked your drivers? Temps and gaming are ok right?
Try gaming on the external and if it artifacts/corrupts it might be time for a gpu upgrade/replacement. -
Drivers are up to date. Have been gaming on the external for over a month now not a problem once. Temps are running mid 50s to 59. I believe that's a normal temp correct?
-
Seems pretty normal/ low if anything. Maybe just a faulty connection between the motherboard and display? Does it still show in device manager the laptop display when it stops working? Or maybe a multi monitor display issue? Maybe just have it set to one moniotor instead of extend or clone?
-
I have changed every display setting for duel monitors etc and its set right now to run on both but only shows up on the external. If i hit alt f6 i will cycle the options and when its set to only lcd i just get a blank screen. I have reconnected the display cables many times on the motherboard and just got the whole new lcd with new cables as well and still same issue. In my monitors in device managers it shows generic PnP monitor-which is my lcd and it shows my external as a samsung syncmaster which it is. Should it say generic PnP or something else?

Bump.
Ideas anyone? -
If you watch the temps closely, at wich temperature does the builtin screen go crazy?
If you start a game it should heat up gpu faster, thus making the screen go black sooner.
I've had a similar problem, and i fixed it. -
Generic PnP is what it should say for the laptop display.
like maxslo says just check for any triggers, temperatures? apps or something making it go black.
Might be worth trying older drivers or ones on the dell website. -
Yeah if i try to run a game it will instantly cause it to go haywire. Think its the gpu.

So i tried a fix on the gpu, taking it heatsink off and paste then putting it in the oven for ten minutes. Someone else on the forums had done it and it had worked. I re thermal pasted it, put the heatsink back on and started it up. Well, now i get nothing on the lcd at all but the external still works fine. Also Generic PnP monitor, which is my lcd doesn't even show up in my device manager... If i fried my card i'm not to worried i was probably gonna upgrade anyway, but why wouldn't my monitor show up in device manager?
-
Went in dusted and reseated everything and its working just fine now. Not sure why the lcd didn't register the first time. Temps are going up as normal when playing a game but its working! Before anything over 60 and it would die. Thanks maxslo for the fix, the oven trick worked!

Glad it worked for you
so will you be selling the extra screen?
i would be interested.
The OP is reffering to the fix mentioned here http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/711981-5870m-works-external-display-only-m17x-r2.html
Update to OP, i just got the new motherboard this morning and the card is still running fine after 4 months -
!
Glad it worked
Alienware M17x R2 replaced my lcd screen, still goes black after about 5 minutes of use.
