Yeah, I saw a similar article, projecting Q3 for the 660Ti. Really, given the power/heat issues with the 580M, it is hard to imagine how a far more powerful 680M could be accommodated by the R3, even using the more efficient Kepler design. But what do I know?

Then we getting reports from all sides that when overclocked the Ivy Bridge CPU's are running much hotter than the equivalent Sandy Bridge chips. It's looking like a good time to go into wait and see mode before making any big system decisions until things are clarified.

Sup worldedit? Thanks for the R3 vs R4 pics. It looks like the mobo is indeed interchangeable. It's also good to see that they've kept the WiHD slot and added mSATA where the Bluetooth module used to be as current WiFi chips all have bluetooth on board anyways. Looking forward to bagging myself one of these :) Oh the wait! I might as well get me a 60Hz screen and a 7970m to play with for now :D

how much would an r3 go nowadays? if we can make a 1600 out of it, then maybe it is a good deal to swap to r4? I mean new mobo and 7970m will cost similar, then you also don't know if the mobo will fit, tech will destroy everything changing mobo, and so on.. :)

For 1600 you can get an R4 with 7970m, I doubt an R3 would be worth more than $1k at this point unless it has a lot of other stuff on it like 2 huge SSD's or something.

Just want to apologize for the repost :)

Hey all! I am really excited about being the proud owner of an Alienware!
Since this is a dream about to come true! I have a few questions I want answered!!

My only doubt is about the Graphics card! The other specs are all pretty good..Ivy Bridge , 6gb ram ..

    The card Choices are
    kepler GTX 660M
    the new AMD HD 7970
    fermi GTX 675M

NVIDIA seems to have PHysx which is my deciding factor! Will physx affect the gameplay that MUCH?

Can I not use Physx with AMD? I remember reading something online that the new 7970 runs PHYSx..

Also.. since I would also love to try the new 3D screen.. will going for the AMD 7970 have any compatibility issues?

and the general opinion is that AMD7970 seems to OWN 675M in every way...
so how far is that true???

i want to go for the best so i ask you again... is physx that big a deal when 7970 seems to outperform 675 in everyway.. and

and when will the much anticipated 680 come to laptops?
What will the price upgrade? Im already paying 300-350 USD more for the 675..

i know im rambling.. but when im shelling out this much for a system.. I want to make sure it stays

    thank you all

this is a longshot... but if I will be able to upgrade my Graphics card in the future :) :D nothing like it !!!!

    My 2 cents:

    - 7970M kills the 675M (a re-badged 580M)
    - The fact that the 675 is more expensive is laughable (i.e. not worth it)
    - 3D is crap, in gaming it's nauseating, in video it's bearable.
    - PhysX is crap unless your lifelong dream is to play Batman Arkham City all day every day, even then, it's not worth it

    TLDR;

Get the 7970M, buy yourself a 120Hz 3D-capable TV. To upgrade to the SUPPOSED 680M will cost you a pretty penny (possibly $500+, and that's optimistic from everything I've seen). Even then, it's not likely it'll even come out any time soon. AMD has this in the bag (only time will tell) for now.

I cannot tell you from experience, I just ordered my m17, but this will be my first ATI card in 10+ years...(yeah, thats what their name was last time I dealt with their products). I love nvidia and really hated with a passion ATI but that was a long time ago and after reading about 80% of these forums, it sounds like the 7970 is something not to be missed.

Wondering the same. The cheapest configuration with 7970m and 1080p screen is $1849.

Also, I'm curious what people think about the warranties. Is it worth it to upgrade to a 2 or 3 year extended warranty? I never had any problems with my Inspiron 1720 that I've had for a few years now, but I have a feeling a gaming rig like this will have a bigger likelihood for issues.

it's not opinion...it's tested fact from members on nbr that actually have the 7970m in their laptops.

The 7970m DESTROYS the 675m. They are in different leagues.

as an nvidia fanboy, I'd recommend the geforce. They release driver updates frequently, some of which resulted in 50% increased performance in Skyrim.

and people love to hate on the 580m, but I've not yet experienced any throttling after hours of gameplay. The only way I've been able to get the card to throttle is with Furmark.

it is not < 1600, just as I expected it is 1670 bucks, after all tax is something you pay right? with tax you cannot get r4 7970m and 1080p installed for 1600..

STILL excellent price dude, congratz on the beast! :)

    Wrong. 3720QM for $19.20 less than 3610QM.
But still, rep for effort :)

So I decided to go with cheaper and more powerful CPU this time.
Now it all makes sense 7970M is also cheaper than 675M, must be new thing in computer marketing.

Curious what if anyone bought an R4 and have a question about your order. What is the normal Estimated Time of Arrival of your new laptop.
The only reason I ask is that Dell is giving me a newer laptop for my troubles that i had with the R1. I see it being "IN Production" since May 1,2012
