Go with adding the 7970m and the Killer Wireless card. Those are fairly decent prices and versus the cost and hassle of having to purchase and install them yourself later on. If I was you, I'd get the default (smallest) hard drive and RAM amount possible. It is much more economical to get an SSD and RAM thru newegg and you can browse for both while your system is being built and shipped. The R4 will take up to 32GB of RAM but at most you will need 16GB. The RAM that I have (and that was recommended to me) is Corsair Vengeance. It has a lot of bang to it. It's not cheap, there are definitely some better priced value RAM modules out there, but has given me good performance. As far as SSDs go, Crucial M4, Intel, Kingston, OCZ Vertex 4, and the Samsung 830 series are the favorites among users here. Most all are SATA III which is what you want since the R4 is capable of SATA III speeds. Both the RAM and SSD are easy to install into the R4. Take a look around the hardware components sub-forum. There are plenty of recommendations there as to which SSD and RAM are better for specific situations.
PS: make sure to get the 240w power supply, not the 180w. It will be FAR less of a headache in the long run.

-
Easy: Definitely get storage (HDD/SSD) and RAM yourself (way cheaper or as radji puts it "much more economical").
Easy/moderate: It would be more economical to get GPU upgrade from DELL because it's 200$ over the price of 660m, if you want to get it separately it's 500$+ and a lot of insecurity (warranty/return policy).
Depends: Network card if the upgrade (as in your case) is 3 antenna version then get it directly from DELL for they will route the 3rd antenna for you, whereas if you buy network card yourself I would imagine it's quite a hassle to do it yourself (as far as I remember antennas go around the LCD). -
Where is 670mx and 675mx?
-
Here's what you do,
Drop the RAM to 8GB, thats already more than enough. And DEFINITELY change the 660M. One does not simply buy an Alienware and choose the worst GPU.
The 7970M is pretty cheap, and SO much more powerful than the 660M. Drop your RAM a bit to save 100 bucks, and get the cheapest hard drive option... RAM and HDDs are the cheapest and easiest components to buy and install aftermarket. You won't regret changing the GPU, it's the only component that matters... so don't skimp on it
About Killer Wireless... are you gonna be using your laptop on wireless all the time. I am always connected to an ethernet cable but I still took the Killer wireless, haven't noticed any significant difference in range... If you aren't completely dependent on wireless, I'd suggest just getting the second best option... I haven't even touched my Killer app, I don't see any benefit from it unless you rely on wireless and don't have a lot of bandwidth (which killer can allocate a certain amount to games, some to downloads, etc)
-
Thanks everyone for your posts.
So, I tried reconfiguring the laptop and I was already at its base specs. I was using the $1,899 starting price model. This is the laptop with the 1920x1080 resolution.
I will be purchasing this notebook from Canada.
Regarding the ram sticks, how do they get distributed in the notebook?
For example, 12GB - 3x3x3x3 or 6x6 or 4x4x4
16GB - 4x4x4x4 or 8x8 (8x8 will ideally help get to that 32GB max by adding another 2 8GB sticks at a later date) -
ratchetnclank Notebook Deity
Says on the website.
But you can't get 3GB sticks so 12GB is 2 x 4GB and 2 x 2GB sticks.
16GB is 2 x 8GB -

How does that look as to sales. -
I would personally upgrade to the ATI 7970.
-
Well, 7970M for a bluray is a big trade off in term of performance. It all depends on how you plan to use your laptop. I think you should call Dell and haggle the price. Even if you aren't the best talker in the world, another $100 off will get you closer to a 7970M.
-
Nah, I agree with VSG28. Should have spent the extra and got the 7970m. I know the 680m would have probably broken the bank.
-
His original specs including a 900p screen and a bluray reader. So I convinced him to get a 1080p which he did but the 660M is still there. And it's only a 190ish to upgrade to 7970M, just the same amount for a bluray reader upgrade.
-
OK, ready to pull the trigger (if I get a decent deal and the 18 month no interest financing.) Two questions:
1. I have read reviews that say the Enduro GPU switching for the 7970 is not so great. I'd prefer to simply manually switch back and forth rather than rely on a program to detect and do so. E.g. if I'm just browsing the web, email, etc. use the integrated GPU, when video editing or gaming switch to the 7970. Is this easy to do via some kind of Fn key on the M17x?
2. Will probably get a 7200 rpm drive plus the mSata 32 g combo just for the convenience of having Windows 7 preinstalled on the mSata. Plan would be to then add an SSD drive myself and use it for programs, the regular drive for data storage (I have a ton of music and video files that take up an enormous amount of space.) I assume adding the SSD drive is simple, i.e. there is an empty SATA 3 SSD bay that I can simply pop it into?
Thanks! -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Hi, good luck with a deal.
For 1, I can't say as on a 120hz display all that works is the add-on GPU. I'm very happy not to have to deal with it - I have no need to save a few Watts or long battery life
.
For 2. The Primary HDD will be where the OS is installed. The Msata SSD will be configured as a cache drive in the intel setup (using the RAID hardware). You will not 'see' it as it will be caching access requests to the HDD. And yes you will have a spare (sata 3) bay, easy to get to to add a standalone SSD later. -
Hello forums !
Been a very long time M11X user, and I just ordered myself an M17x with the $200 off special for orders greater than $2000. The below setup cost me $1899 (2-day free shipping).
A few questions:
- Have I made a mistake? Should've waited until new year? Etc...
- I'm not planning on 3D gaming at all. Is the 3D screen option still much better though (higher refresh rate and all)?
- I used the free Windows 8 update - a mistake?
- I think 7970m is by far the best bang for the buck - anyone disagree?
- Is there anything in the below setup that you would change given an additional two to three hundred dollars to spend?
Thanks for all your input !

Looks good, maybe get rid of the raid option just fit your own SSD? Also might as well add in the killer wireless? probably better range on it compared to the intel since there should be more antennas i think plus its less hassle to upgrade now compared to later as you might have to wire in another antenna?, cant say, since mine came with killer wireless. otherwise it looks pretty good, 1080p screen will be fine, 3d will kill the battery life as the igpu is disabled then. The ati card is better bang for your buck but the 680m has a bit more support from nvidia (less issues with optimus).
-
Get the cheapest 6Gb RAM option. You can always upgrade it yourself for way less.
Call Dell rep and haggle the price a bit, may be? -

What you guys think? Please help? Should I buy it or should I wait for the newer Alienware m17x which might release around in spring or summer i dont know exactly with haswell CPU and nvidia 700 series, yes I'm a intel and nvidia kind of guy.
Nishiitsri,
Hi choose the 6 Gig ram and 500 hdd, later you can change it yourself saving some money for your future upgrades
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Hi there, welcome
Looks like a great build and price. The 3840 is probably overkill for a gaming machine but if saving a few bucks is not a consideration then go for it.
I'm a NV guy as well and the 680m is getting good reviews (along with the 3D which I am a BIG fan of). Waiting for the next iteration is a never ending wait and personally, if there is not an announcement of something I want/need, then I buy
As for the 700 series, if it comes out during the R4 then Dell could release a BIOS update to support it, but if the R3 is anything to go by, after a model is superseded they won't update it. They have so far refused to make the R3 work with a 680 in 3D even though it's just a BIOS update
Oh yeah, just because I'm posting, Assassins Creed 3 is a pile of p*** in 3D. Worst I have seen in many, many, years
Good Luck
-
Hi MickyD1234,
Thanks for the reply,
I'm new to the notebook and upgrading! So your saying if dell will release bios for R4 I can upgrade it to NV 700 series later on?
I also configured the alienware m18x R2 these are specs:
Alienware M18X R2 Alienware M18X R2 with Soft Touch
Windows® 7 Professional, 64bit
Processor 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3840QM (8MB Cache, up to 3.8GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0)

TOTAL: $4,154.00
With 455$ saving I got $3,699.00
What you think? -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
You're very welcome!
I'm saying they might, unlike other custom built machines dell like to keep them 'as is' so if you're used to the kind of support you get from motherboard manufactures it's a bit of a disappointment. The next gen cards might well work (and people here will find a way if it is possible) but the 3D WILL need a bios update and you're at the hands of the guys that do this stuff for fun.
I also looked hard at the M18x and actually purchased an SLI when the 580m was the top GPU.Nice and fast but I really like the extra a good 3D gives, and as no games could even stretch the SLi I returned it for a R3.
Can't comment on prices as I'm in the UK where all the $ prices look good - We pay around 1/3 more in direct conversion price
-
I will be in UK London in December I'm going there to study, yes the UK prices are higher than US but I'm trying to order it from US because I have relatives living there, but I'm not sure if they can send it to me by FedEx or UPS not sure? And now I'm confused I don't know which one to get m17x R4 or the m18x R2, and your right 3D is good option but SLi is also good and powerful, I'm not worried about the price tag, I need a gaming notebook that will last around 3-5 years I guess.
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Yeah, you should be OK with them shipping (your laptop for study
). Just do a warranty transfer as soon as it arrives so you get support. I'd lived in the US for 10 years but since I'm in the UK now I can't chase deals - but still retain the ability to purchase there if I want to
If price is the lowest factor and gaming the highest then I say go for the M17x. More people using them and SLi can be a challenge if you've never used it before
+3D is neat.
-
Good point on the 3D i love it too hows the 3D on m17x r4 is it good for blu ray movies gaming and stuff or does it lack on laptop display, (and no this is not for school
for school I already have portable laptop, this is for gaming mostly). What do you mean by saying SLI can be challenging will I have some troubles with it? Sorry for to many questions I'm a bit new to gaming laptops and SLI upgrading stuff
.
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
lol, I just meant for shipping purposes, you should not be liable for VAT or import duties
I cant speak specifically to the M18x as the last time I used SLI I had built a quad SLI (295's) and although it was a lot of fun getting it working there were times it took a little work. But of course it has got better I assume since then. I see SLI as becoming unnecessary. The GPU's are getting powerful enough that having it for a laptop is becoming less of a need.
No prob with the questions, I'll go quiet if you get dumb
-
Oh lol, Thanks man a lot for your help, I'm still confused about getting m18x or m17x,. From what your saying M17x R4 is a good laptop for daily gaming 3D movies and a bit lighter than the bigger brother for portability and its very powerful for its price with GTX680m. I think I made my choice but ill think again.
Thanks again:thumbsup: -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Exactly. The 3D gaming in the 'right' game is totally the best I have ever seen, so that sold me, but see if you get any other advice on the M18x.
Good luck with whatever you go for, they are both very nice pieces of kit
-
Any updates on 675mx/670mx Kepler cards?
-
Hey guys first post on Notebookreview! recently ordered a M17x with specs below on the 20/11 and the EDD is 21/12, wondering how reliable the EDD is and whether it'll arrive before or after. I'd love it before Christmas but I've been hearing that there are some stock issues at the moment regarding Alienware laptops so I'm pessimistic
Specs : Alienware M17x | 6GB RAM | AMD Radeon HD 7970M | 500GB ATA HDD (7,200rpm) | Intel® Core™ i7-3740QM | HD display (1920x1080) | Killer Wireless-N 1103 -
Done but still I need to reduce something more to bring it into 1500 pound range...why m i nt in US
@MickeyD I was wondering whether to go for GT675MX or GT680...there was no option to upgrade to GT680 though
...
Also any way to pester dell ppl to reduce the price...my budget is milited ot 1500 pounds
-
If you can downgrade the RAM to 4GB, do it. As alienman999 said, you can always upgrade the RAM and hard drive later on. Those are easy to install yourself and you can get better prices for both from Newegg. The only other option you can downgrade is the CPU. If you can live with an i7-3720QM instead of an i7-3840QM, then the drop in price should bring it down to £1500. Just make sure to get the discount he was talking about.
-
I got my mine
i7 3630qm
6gb ram (basic)
500gb (basic)
gtx 680m (£250 option at the time)
killer wireless
1080p screen
£1350 original RRP price of around £1700. Was a promotional discount of £205 ex vat automatically applied and 10% off (voucher code google them as they expire quick) and free delivery (same again voucher code google them as they expire quickly). Get your price online for your spec, I guess just changing the processor for you and ring them up AFTER you have saved the basket, make a screenshot as well! They will get back to you on with a real quote which will be honoured anytime basically. -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Well, the 680 keeps popping in and out of stock but spending the most on the GPU is a good strategy - it will cost more (even if you go third-party) later since you are in effect throwing away the cash spent on the card you go for. It was not an option when I ordered so I went for the 675 and so far have been very happy with it. All the latest titles I have tried play perfect in max settings (with the exception of AA which is a card killer for little return IMO) so I've not gone for an upgrade - yet. As soon as a title (farcry 3 I'm thinking seeing it) makes me notch down the settings then I'll be in the market
I read that the AW support guys can also place an order and have access to discounts but it's really a case of finding a decent dell rep and selling them a story as to why you need a better discount.
Good Luck! -
So when is 670mx/675mx going to be available?
-
Thnkx...will do it...i figured out a way to get GT680M but the 3-d screen is incompatible then....should i go for 3-D screen or GTX 675M???
I also wanted to know standard battery life(without playing games, just some music or movies) you will get from this?? -
You should get a little over an hour of battery life, at least thats what im getting on my R4
-
Over an hour battery life? When I put mine on power saving I get over 3 hours
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
]Around 2.5 hours on mine. Are you watching video? That will drain it but 1 hour is not good
-
To be honest I haven't tested this yet, but if you're gaming in high performance power settings it will literally eat your battery's charge. You can always switch it to power saver and get some more time but less performance.
-
Figured that our the hard way the other day. My buddies lesser asus was out performing my m14x, needless to say I was embarrassed, especially when I found out I was on power saver.

anyone know a way to transfer the OS from hdd or just keep as is ..thanks -
Welcome to the forums!
A couple of popular image backup programs are Acronis and Paragon, you could try with those. In my opinion, a clean OS install is even better, you can download the latest drivers for the M17x R4 and set up your rig up in no time.
If you need anything don't hesitate to ask
Great build by the way, the 680m is a beast
-
why cant I get a similar spec in UK....this is really bad!!! I'm either getting a 680m or a 3-d bundle not both!!!
-
Why did the price of the m17x go up?

Yes, the 680M is fully 3d capable, so call them and haggle like you should anyway

A few of tips for people considering ordering a new M17x R4.
1. If you intend to have an MSata boot drive and use the dual hard drive slots for regular drives or full size SSD's, be aware that the MSata slot is a motherf... to get to. You have to nearly completely disassemble the laptop to get to it if you plan to do it yourself after purchase, since it's under the left side of the palm rest next to the touchpad. So, even though it's pricey, buy it with the order if you don't want to take your machine apart in the first day.
2. While aftermarket ram is cheap, again, you have to remove the keyboard and whatnot to get to the upper ram slots. Not too bad, but if you were only expecting to remove the bottom cover, you may be disappointed or overwhelmed if you aren't computer savvy.
3. Video card - (puts flame retardant suit on) - The 7970m is more than adequate for pretty much anything you can throw at this beast. If you want to see the hair on some guys nuts at 500 yards, then ya, you might want to go with the 680m, but for me did not come close to justifying the additional $350 (holy crap!) for that card, especially since I use a 5870 in my desktop for triple screen gaming.
4. Blu-ray - works great if you play on the main laptop monitor, but if you don't have an hdcp compliant connection to an external monitor (hdmi, etc), and you had planned to watch movies on something other than the main screen, you may be disappointed. Oh, and spring for the 1080p LCD if you want the best picture for hi-def movie viewing.
5. Windows 8 - works like a champ (Still a crap GUI on top of a great OS, but it can be circumvented if you choose)
Enjoy! -
I would reccomend anyone get the 680m +3d combo... holy cow, I was playing some vanilla wow last night... just... amazing... full details +1080p + 3d = awesome... it plays @ 101.4FPS (the maximum) and it is holy cow glorious!
I also have played mechwarrior online in maxxed out full detail and got 50fps
I'll let you know the performance of other games as well when I get them. I'm waiting to install a bunch until I get my SSD's today or tomorrow
My rig is basically stock + the 680m & 3d screen
soon I will upgrade my 6gb of ram to 16gb and very soon I will upgrade my hard drive to two SSD's
But I am quite pleased and my rig cost under 2400 with tax!
