Hello, I currently like to buy the Alienware M17x R4 laptop because I love its design, the problem is that this model has been left behind, there are different options, but the most common is "i7 3720QM" and "GTX 660M".
At this time, my idea would be to buy it and then update all its components to the maximum allowed by the motherboard.
According to my reports, this model contains the following motherboard:
Motherboard La-8341p
I think your socket model is Intel HM77, which left the maximum processor i7-3940XM
There would be a type of BIOS update so you can do something higher.
The RAM memory of the most compatible motherboard would be 32 GB DDR3, compatible processors support a maximum of 1600mhz of ddr3. In this aspect, I see the RAM of nonsense purchases with frequency of 2400 Mhz.
From the graphics card and seen that I could put a GTX 1070, I do not know if there could be something better or if I would not like it to be a bottle ass for the processor.
The seen from here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...other-socket-victory-against-bga-crap.803637/
and as for the hard drive, my idea was to have 2TB in SSD, but i think is the better than SSD + HDD because the SSD does not have as much useful life, if you use it enough, there is no better than an SSD for the operating system and then an SSHD disk.
I understand very little technology, the little or almost nothing.
you me could clarify me the best components for my Alienware M17x R4.
I apologize for my horrible English

Yes you're right the best configuration is the 1070 with I7-3940.
I would recommend you to talk with @woodzstack to buy the card and I advise you to buy the heatsink with the triple pipes in order to avoid high temperatures.
But I don't know why you are creating a new thread if you already have 2 great threads with a lot of information and even with fotos and print screens.
Besides that good luck for the new machine but buy it only if it is for a low price because the upgrades are super expensives.
Kind regards,

How much money would you spend on such a notebook? I got a m17xR4 with an 3920XM and a GTX1070. Its condition is superb, it was black back in the day, but i replaced everything with new nebula red spare parts.

woodzstack Alezka Computers , Official Clevo reseller.
1060N is best bang for the dollar too, and for like 50% extra cost you get 50% extra performance with the 1070 so all in all it's about what you want to afford really.
but if your gonna spend over 1,000$ upgrading, might as well just ask me to price you a new laptop or something instead. Might cost twice as much but then you get something new that can use DDR4, skylake/kabylake/coffeelake who knows.. with maybe NVMe possibiltyaconix likes this. -
woodzstack I would love to have a conversation because I am interested in a GPU, could you send me an MP please?
