After owning my Alienware m17x R1 for about 2 months i got a message is the bios when i booted it up one morning saying AC adapter not supported plug in 240w originally shipped, after seeing this i tried everything turning off removing the battery and holding power button down and so on. So i ordered a new Ac adapter and the battery did still not charge, i then thought it must of been the battery a new one arrived today and im still getting the same message i tried flashing the bios and that did not work. PLEASE HELP!!!

Did you try Function+F2? On my R3 it enables/disables battery charging

Did you order a genuine Flextronics/Deta 240 watt AC adapter? Have you tried another battery?

I realize that you have an M17x, but I will share some things that worked for me in the past as an M17x R2 owner.

Try turning off the AC adapter warning message in the BIOS and see if it still charges after rebooting. I had an M17x R2 that did the obnoxious beep during post and gave that warning message from the first time it was powered up when I unboxed it brand new, but it still charged properly. I simply left the silly warning turned off in the BIOS.

If the system is not charging within Windows ("plugged in, not charging error message in system tray) try these steps:
    1. Open Device Manager
    2. Expand the Batteries tree
    3. Under the expanded Batteries, right-click on the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery device and select Uninstall (Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other devices)
    4. Click Action, then Scan for hardware changes
    5. Allow Windows to scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and it will re-install the drivers needed to manage your battery.
The notebook may now indicate that the battery is charging.
There is an old thread on the "plugged in, not charging problem" that affected many M17x R2 systems... http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...ed-not-charging-fix-discussion-thread-42.html. Not every M17x R2 had this problem. (The one I currently own never has exhibited this problem.)

Thanks for your help but none of those solutions worked. The battery logo has a red cross in the right corner if that means anything, i tried reinstalling windows to and that dident work :( should i take it to a shop?

It may be the motherboard. Given that you have already replaced the battery and AC adapter and neither resulted in resolution, there is not much else that can be wrong unless the battery or AC adapter your purchased is defective.

    Hi Luke,

Didn't see the answer to Tsunade's question so thought I'd ask it again. Did you buy a genuine Dell power adapter? The reason I ask is some of the generic ones aren't identified by Alienware and therefore will not work. Otherwise I agree with Mr. Fox and that it could very well be your motherboard.

    Good luck to you.
