So I have an Alienware M17x r2. I have had the motherboard replaced before and everything works fine. Just recently my D key completely broke on my keyboard so I ordered 2 replacement keyboards. When i swap out my old keyboard with the replacement keyboard, my laptop no longer charges and only runs off battery power. My old keyboard, when plugged in, will allow the computer to charge as normal. Has anyone found a solution to this problem?

It sounds like the new keyboard is not the correct part, or your connectors are not placed properly. Most likely the first.

IF the keyboard is correct:
To eliminate finger trouble when connecting ribbon cables, have you connected back and forth a few times and error repeats on only new keyboard?
You using the same ribbon cable(s) on both keyboards? -
Thank you for the fast responses. I have connected back and forth a few times and error repeats on only new keyboard. The ribbon cables I am using seem to be different because the bigger ribbon cable looks to be green when the old keyboard is blue. I think it's what zombiegoat said, most likely the wrong part. It sucks I have ordered 2 keyboards from different places and get the same result. I will try to research and find the right part. Thanks guys, this was really helpful so wish me luck.

Do dell supply spares still for the laptop maybe?

Nope that was the first place that I looked. I just happened to take out my keyboard again, and screen shot the DP/N and Model number and googled it and found a match. Just ordered it hope it works!
I hate it when something is broke and I cant fix the solution... Wish me luck.

This issue happened to me when I attempted to replace my keyboard after the SHIFT key split in half. When I installed the new keyboard, it not only said that it was now running on battery power only, but that the overclocking attempt had failed. Good move on Googling the part #... often when sellers say they are for a M17x/1/2/3, they aren't for the one you want. Mine was an R2 keyboard, and I needed a hoary old R1. The good news is that once the correct keyboard was installed, everything ran perfectly.
Good luck! -
Awesome! That's great news for me then! I am glad im not the only one who had this problem lol.
