    Hi,

School is about to start in 3 months and I'm planning to buy an Alienware m17x. My question is if it is too heavy to carry around to school if I don't bring any books?

    And what about the m17x?

    Yours,
    Kratos

I would get a netbook for school. It's not that you can't carry the M17x but it would be more convenient carrying something that is 2lbs rather than 12lbs.

BTW, I work for a school and I've only seen one student carrying around the M17x. Most carry some type of portable 15" system.

I'd definately get a cheap netbook like a Mini 10 for school to supplement the M17x. But if your going to be carrying the M17x, get the advanced warranty because carrying it often will increase the chances of it being dropped.

I agree with getting a netbook. I have a 15 inch laptop which is already too heavy and too big to carry around al day. Netbooks have also far superior battery life compared to gaming laptops. Fighting with your fellow clasmates for an electric plug is not something you want to do everyday.

Power like Student said is a problem for the M15x/M17x. They really are portable game machines, less work-a-day laptops. But then .... you game right?

Otherwise get something else less powerful with good battery life. This is where an M11x comes in :)

The M17x is quite easily portable, it and the aluminum briefcase i carry mine is is only about 20lbs so its not that unmanagable at all.

But dealing with school + books + sometimes having lack of power would lead me to get an M11x and a spare battery to maximize my "off the grid" time. I know it would generally be expensive to get an M17x and M11x but that really is the best of all worlds there. You have an amazing DTR and a nice portable machine that is still plenty powerful that with a spare batter can easily give you all day power.

Agreed, thats the route I went. I love the M17x because I like being able to move my game station should I choose to do so, and without much hassle, The portibility of the M11x is an awesome compliment to the M17x. Definately the best of both worlds. But if your going to be swapping the M11x battery, be sure to pack a small phillips head screwdriver ;)
