    Hey guys,

I have experienced a weird problem with my Alienware M17x.

I just received my Steel Series 7G Keyboard, however when I plugged the two usb cables ( One PS2 to USB connection for the keyboard, and one separate USB cable for the inbuilt USB hub on the keyboard ) into the laptop my internet died. I am now getting the following error:

"local area connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration"

I hope it didn't short out or something on the motherboard and now my ethernet card is stuffed?

The laptop works absolutely fine on wifi however when I connect to my network with the ethernet cable it says "Unknown Network" and lists it as public.

I have a feeling something bad has happened :/.

a wifi connection uses the wireless card in your PCI socket.
As for a short may be possible. Try removing battery/power cable, remove the CMOS battery and drain the juice that is left in the machine pressing the on/off button for ~20 sec. -> try again it could work if there's a security implemented somewhere.
