So just recently about 2 weeks ago or so, a very strange problem has crept up on my Alienware m17xR3, and I haven't seen this issue happen on any of my other PC's in all my years working with computers..
All USB flashdrives with the exception of my two Verbatim flashdrives(they almost always open up instantly) are now super slow to open/recognize by Windows 7 when inserted into ANY of my USB ports (2.0 and 3.0)..
I'll be putting a usb key into a port and will be waiting a good 1-2 minutes before the computer even realizes it has a usb stick and opens it. The usb noise for connecting plays as usual, only the flashdrive won't be visible yet for quite some time..
All other devices like USB mouse and external USB powered hard drives are unaffected by this phenomenon. Also, the usb flash drives I'm testing work perfectly on other computers in my household, so they cannot be faulty devices.
I have scanned my computer for viruses(nothing found). I've also checked the USB Root Hub items under device manager, and the boxes for "Allow this computer to turn off device to save power" are all unchecked.
So yeah, I'm at my wits end here, completely baffled. Not sure if a recent Windows 7 update broke the USB ports or what..

Seems that all lexar jumpdrives in my household open slow as heck on my computer, except for other computers in the house. Same goes for ScanDisk Cruzer's.. All other brands of usb jumpdrives work instantly tho.
USB powered external HDD's load instantly too.. So what gives? -
Just for the heck of it, I tested loading Ubuntu 12.0 Live CD on my Alienware at startup.
All USB jumpdrives (including the lexars and scandisk cruzers) load just fine on the different OS.
At least I can now rule out any hardware issues with the alienware m17xr3.. So my Windows 7 install must be glitched with weird driver complications for those usb jumpdrives. I also ran a complete Malware Bytes Anti-Malware scan and found nothing. And I performed a system file checker scan just to see if anything else needed fixing.
Let me guess, everyone here will probably tell me that I need to reformat? I hope not! I've come too far on my current setup.. I can't fathom having to reinstall everything and download massive gaming patches for all my MMO's.. X_X -
Just to give an update.. After MANY hours of pulling my hair out and trying to search Google for others that had the same/similar problems..
The culprit is Samsung Kies software (the program I installed for my Samsung Galaxy SIII phone)..
See link for reference Windows 7 Explorer not showing drive while it show... - SanDisk Forums
After killing the running Kies agent service processes and uninstalling; all my USB flashdrives are working instantly again as before.
Thank you Samsung for giving us faulty software! >_< -
I was going to say that somehting was accessing the drive before you opened it, glad you found the culprit.
