I am actually still contemplating getting an R2 depending on the pricing/specs of the R3. I have read or heard about the SSD, but I think if you use the Dell drivers Crossfire should work fine. Remember that for every post on here about an issue with the R2 there are probably 5 satisfied customers who have never had problems.

umm your setup rocks!!! M18x is still a myth and even top spec'd r3 with 6970 will only gave similar performance, and will not blow your laptop out of the water.

just play games and be happy.

You got a great system 100% 920XM with throttlestop is a beast of a cpu.5870's in xfire most on here are well happy with them,Even a single 5870 is damn good. You now have a unlocked bios V1F available to flash from the wiz.I believe he is working on V2F which he mentioned the possibility of having 10% on the BCLK & maybe future support for more gpu support .It's a great time to have a R2 its stable. Not forgetting the RGB display.Best Alien ever released in my opinion .SSD not payed much attention to the issue a i dont have one .

He's got a good point. The customer reviews are always skewed. The average person could care less on writing one. Only people who are really pleased or really pissed right about it.

Anyways, CF issues dont seem to be that bad, and I wouldn't worry a lot. unless it starts acting up on you, then there is no real need to worry.
Dunno about ssd, but I've heard even less problems about that.
With your rig, you have a beast of a laptop. With throttlestop, you could overclock you system and pretty much conquer any title (except crysis or metro 2033) on max details full 1080p. Yes the r2 is not going to be upgradeable past this point, but you still have a great system that will still work just fine several years from now.

It is most certainly "not anything" compared to the r3 or m18x (which is pretty much pure speculation at this point). The 5870CF is equal or better than the 6970m in the r3, and even if the 485m were released, it would still equal or beat it. Plus, with the r3 lacking an extreme SB processor, you can overclock you 920xm and easily beat the 2820qm or 2720qm.

Yes the r2 is going to be outdated, but it is still a magnificent machine. comparing it to the r3 is apples to oranges, because the r3 has 1 gpu and no extreme cpu, while the r2 is the opposite. m18x is still not confirmed at this point, just a speculation riding on the prayers of most r2 owners. Enjoy your system, and if you really feel bad about it, then you can always return it and wait for something else or get the r3.

thewiz and others are trying to hack the bios to where it would accept the 6970m or 470m. However, if it was hacked, the 6970m crossfire would not be possible due to psu restraints. I think 470m sli is possible if you dont overclock much/all.

Well umm I'm not exactly an alienware owner currently, but I just believe that there is no reason for you to feel bad about owning an awesome system.

The thread is around here somewhere if you want to look at all the upgrade he already unlocked.

r2 bios or something like that.

A 6970M doesn't consume much more power than a 5870M. Measured tests show it's not 100w like people assume. So as long as proper support can be added via the bios, xfire would be possible.

I still love r2 , because of the aluminum and the hardware build.

You don't really need the best , there is many beast desktop out there , they can build as many ssd/gpu they want , no point to compare r2 with r3 as long you love your own m17x and without any problem and use it smoothly.

xth thats the hole point, there is nothing  nothing like an R2. The build the weight and feel is like nothing else. Would not trade mine for anything. Glade I bought one. ;)

nice to heard it Joker, I contacted to MXM upgrade site and asked them about 6970M Xfire upgrade in my R2 and they told me about maybe there is an issue about power limit, now if it's not 100w, we just wait for good news from TheWiz and there you go!
