Here is the issue today my m17x r2 stoped posting. Alienware is going to replace the system all together. This is what they are offering. What I have is next in ().

    8GB Dual Channel Memory (same)
Intel Core i7 840QM Quad Core Processor, 1.86GHz (820qm quad)
Slot-Loading Dual Layer Blu-ray Reader (Blu ray burner)
    17-inch WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 RGB LEDn 1200p (same)
CrossfireX 1GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5870 (same)
    512GB Raid 0 2x 256GB Samsung Solid State HDDs(One 256 SSD 1 500g 7200 rpm drive)
Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate, 64bit, English (same)
    Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR (same)
Intel Ultimate N WiFi Link 6300 a/g/n 3x3 MIMO Technology (same)

I know the SSD is better but 250g smaller. I can sell one of the drives and buy another 500g hard drive if i choose. No problem there.

So it is a small upgrade on the proccesor.

But not having the blu ray burner, (a upgrade I watied for and paid for), really bothers me.

What can I do since Alienware does not have them any more? I don't want to take a down grade.

get them to swap bluray burner out of old machine when new one arrives :)
just ring them and ask so your bluray will still have warranty

I asked them to do that, they told me they could not. I have thought about asking for then to upgrade to the extreme proccesor and I'll keep the blu ray player. I can buy a blu ray burner for 100 bucks on new egg for my desktop pc.

    think they might do this?

I don't know, they might, but the extreme proc is an expensive upgrade.

They should replace your machine with a same or better specced one.
Tell them that the bluray burner was a reason of purchase don't let them downgrade you.

Trust me, once you get the system ring them up and tell them how having the reader and not burner is a downgrade from your old system and they are supposed to give you the same or better.

They will replace it for you if you are persistent and firm.

This is what I did with my system replacement when they did not send a system with sli or the correct monitor

Also, hit me up if you decide to part with one of your ssd's.

try for the extreme upgrade and if you get it, that's a great deal. doubt you will though...

if they refuse it, accept the deal you've been given and just swap the BR drives when you get the replacement system. if dell even cares when they get the replacement system back, you can say that they were going to replace it as a spare part anyways.

this falls, imo, in the "better to ask for forgiveness than permission" side of things.....

I would push for better processor and keep 2x 256 SSD's. Basically max out the machine on their dime. Sell the components you don't need. Swap out the drive when the new system arrives. It's really not that hard to do if you take your time and use a big table and keep your screws separated. Also cover your screen and protect it from scratches. Trust me on this one. Start with your old system and then move to the new system. If you screw up the old one no loss. They are not going to hunt you down if they happen to notice that the drives don't match. Dell would never get anything done if they disassembled each and every computer that came back to them. I'm sure all they do is throw it to a dept that reconditions them for resale.

This is what they are going to replace it with.

    8GB Dual Channel Memory (2x 4GB DDR3)
Intel Core i7 940XM Quad Core Processor, 2.13GHz (3.33GHz Turbo Mode, 8M Cache)
    Slot-Loading Dual Layer Blu-ray Reader (BR-ROM, DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
    17-inch WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 RGB LED (1200p)
1024 MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 with ATI CrossFireX technology
256GB SSD - Samsung Solid State Drive
Intel Ultimate N WiFi Link 6300 a/g/n 3x3 MIMO Technology

I had to choose between the 2 ssd drive and the extreme proccessor I took the proccessor.

They are telling me to pull my 500 gb drive out of the old and put in the new one when it gets here. Witch is fine with me. They also told me changing the optical drive was fine also. So I get everything I wanted :)

    Hi all,

Well i finally am getting my M17x R2 replaced by Alienware, after about 15 - 20 callouts, replacement parts, funny thing it was order on Monday and was dispatched at around 11am today.

But this is coming from China and i am in the UK.

The key to a repleacement is keep all evidance of each visit, what has and has not worked each time parts have been replaced or damaged when engineer has worked on laptop.
