Here's a couple quick clips note the 2nd computer is the R3 not R2....OOPS ) in both video's

The best in my opinion is the M17x R4 1080p screen. The 900p R3 screen is the worst by far. The M18x 1080p screen is nice but has a yellow/orange tint on white backgrounds. The M17x R2 RGB 1200p screen is nice but dimmer than the rest.

To me the M17x r2 with the 1200p screen looks much clearer than all the others followed by the M17x r4.

It bugs me that computer monitors and now laptop monitors are 1080p..... When I bought my Dell 2408 WPF Ultra sharps; I did because they were 1900x1200. That extra 200 pixels on the bottom is for your start bar while you are watching 1080p video....., for a TV it might not be such a big deal.

Money...ha ha nope it's called a Dell Charge card. I got these for well under market value and I'm keeping the M17x R4 the rest are for sale :) If the M18x had a better video card I may have kept that one but it has the 560m where the R4 has the 7970. The R3 has the 6990 and the R2 has dual 5870's.

If I where to ever watch a movie on a laptop it would be fullscreen I would not want to be distracted by the start bar :)

    Well,
there can be no comparison... or better... no competition against M17xR2 RGB screen, maybe expect retina/IPS panels.

My alien was in repair for 4 days, so i borrowed my brothers MSI GX 740, and after my m17x came back after 4 days, i felt like i would been cast off hell straight up to High Heavens.

But this was MSI, anyway, you get my point :)

The R2 screen is very nice but noticeably dimmer then the 1080p R4's screen. I would be happy with either screen but the colors on the R4 screen seem to just "POP" more.

Thanks so much for the side by side comparison. :)

I also still find the R2 the best, but I'm glad the R4 has comparable quality! And while the R4 may be brighter, to my old eyes the R2 is plenty bright enough :D

I personally own the R4 and the R2. Love them both but overall the I prefer the R4 because it's easier to hold/lighter, has much better battery life, is obviously much more powerful and the screen IMO isn't noticeably worse than the R2. Comparing the R4 to other current model laptops it's still one of the best. I wish the R4 had dual graphics but I guess that's the price to pay for having a lighter laptop and longer battery.

My next Alienware will me an M18x when my 3 years of Alienware warranty expires.

Is it just the pictures or is the R4 that bad at black levels? It seems almost gray/white rather than black. I'm considering ditching my R3 as I have the dreaded 580 issues with not keeping it cool without propping it up on a book, but I had heard the R4 had a much dimmer display (3d screen) than the R3 (3d screen).

Have you heard anything on the R4's 3D screen?

Thanks for the side by sides!!

How did you acquire these laptops for below market value? What did you pay for each? If you don't mind my asking.

The R3 was the one with the Horrid screen. The 1600 x 900 screen Dell uses is just a bad quality screen. I had a $400 Toshiba 17" laptop with the same resolution screen and it looked identical in every way. Why a Alienware would ever have such a loq quality screen is beyond me. The R4 with the 1080p screen is beatiful.

How are the speakers on the m18x? Is it the model with the sub? Subs make such a huge difference for laptop audio. Sad that m17x R4 doesn't have one.

I have the R3 with 3D and the screen is not 1600x900. It's a 1920x1080 120Hz (Version 1). Same aspect ratio, but very different resolution.

My question was on the 3D screens only compared to R3 and R4.

I wish alienware would offer matte screens. My brother's Asus G74 seems to handle black levels better than mine, but his colors are noticeably "warmer" ... which gives everything a yellowish tint compared to R3
