Was wondering, I have an Alienware M17 R4 lap top and I replaced the gpu with a Nvidia 970 card. I had windows 8.1 on the lap top and every time I wanted a new NVidia driver I had to modify it to work on my lap top. Well I up-graded to windows 10 and it installed the NVidia driver fine. My question is now that there are newer NVidia drivers out there can I just down load them and install them without having to modify them first?

No , if the card is not the standard fit all Nvidia drivers you install will have to have the inf. modded ,same for me with my 980m on my R5..pain in the arse especially if you switch between optimus or dedicated because one set of drivers modded in say optimus will not work in dedicated.

I just installed that stuff (970M and W10) and I had a driver installed automatically by OS that is working (353. 82) but perhaps not perfect ... tests are still ongoing.
I had no .inf modded to do ... strange isn'it?

Note: I edited and changed the previous .57 digit of my driver number by .82 which is the actual one I have just checked on the computer. Sorry for that, I was away on Tuesday when I wrote that post and I mismatch the number. However I can confirm this 353.82 has been installed automatically by W10 (not modded).

Some of the newer nVidia drivers are able to install any nVidia HWID's out there. That may be it.

Why these stupid HWIDs even exist? They doesn't check desktop computers so why they even check DTRs?

Hi L_Porras. Just corrected the digits of the driver. It is 353.82 not .57 (shame on me  I didn't check twice the number and trusted my human being poor memory). I will try to verify if this driver is a generic passkey.
