Merry Christmas to anyone reading this...looking for some Christmas goodwill for my busted m17x...

Let me take it from the top:

My computer seems to be suffering from something, I think technically called, being f&%$ed. I have an Alienware m17x R2 8Gb RAM Intel® CoreTM i7 940 ATI HD5870 Mobility Radeon with Windows® 7 Ultimate 64-Bit

I recently updated the following on my system, ATI Graphics Driver, and Japanese IME as instructed by the computer, as well as installing AVG on there.

I was in the middle of installing the ATI Grpahics Driver, and got BSOD'd...(although it wasn't a full screen one like I have had before, it was a small BSOD in the middle of the screen), and then the computer froze. Had to disconnect the power supply to turn it off.

I restarted in safe-mode and ran the computer back to the restore point before I did any of the updates, and the computer froze while heading back to the restore point, I killed the power again, after waiting for 1 hr.

Yesterday was able to run the computer on start-up through the start up windwos logo, and then I got a black screen, and computer is freezing.

I have tried booting from the recovery disk provided with the computer, but it doesn' seem to work, even when I set the CD drive to boot before the hard drive using bios set-up.

I really love my computer, but have no idea what to do next, it would be great to get some feedback on the error messages I got on the initial BSOD, but I don't know where to find them.

I am not a computer guru, but neither am I a complete pleb...so looking for some clear advice here guys and girls...

Did you do the VBIOS flash? Ever since this flash I get BSOD's like you describe when I tries to Re-install my graphics drivers. To be honest the best thing you can do is start it up in Safe mode, back up all your data and do a clean install with all the latest drivers off the Dell website. Follow the instructions on order in which to install and your computer will be back up and running in a few hours
