Hello all, I have a Alienware m17x r1 with the specs:
    250gb hard drive 7200 rpm
    4gb ddr3 ram
    2 260m gtx in sli
    and I have this processor

I have found that in most games the processor is bottle necking the system. In Battlefield on low settings (and resolutions) I get only 30 fps and not smoothly. In battlefield 3 (and most other games) the processor sits at 100% at all times and the graphics cards usage is 65-80 on both cards. So I was looking to upgrade it. And was wondering, Which processor would give better performance? Or will it even be noticeable? The two processor's that I am looking at upgrading too are:

    Q9100

    and T9600

Which would be better for gaming, if any performance boost at all. Also with the larger wattage on the quad core would it overheat? (just reduce battery life right?) I really want to get the quad core.

    Thanks a ton -Bensticles

i went with the qx9300 because it is overclockable in bios by changing the unlocked multipliers. Its also the highest processor you can go to.
I got it brand new from star micro and it costs less than 300... So if you are thinking of upgrading, might as well go all the way. I did and I couldnt be happier.

You could consider a Q9200 without spending $$$ on a Core 2 Extreme and not pay money for a crappy quad core like a Q9000.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I think I will go with the q9200 it's the best processor in my budget. Is the q92000 overclockable? or does it have to be the extreme cpu?

    - Thanks again bensticles

For the multipliers to become unlocked in bios, it has to be an extreme cpu. However there are ways of overclocking by modifying the FSB in bios, but when i did that before i upgraded to the qx9300 my video cards went all screwy and the fans wouldnt work like they were supposed to for some reason. That was the deciding factor for me to move up to the qx9300. Since i upgraded I havent had any more issues with my r1.
So in my opinion, and its just my opinion on it... If you dont get the extreme cpu you will run into issues down the road if your objective is overclocking.
But if you arent going to be overclocking and speed of your cpu isnt an issue, go with which ever cpu you are comfortable with...
Also, price is the biggest factor in it all, go for the one you can comfortably afford.
