Mandarin chinese is not my first language but i think what they are saying is the r3 looks like crap and everyone should stick to r2 till the m18x comes out...i kid i kidd.that is the tequilla speaking not me...=p
-
Thanks 5150Joker for the pictures ! rep+
-
Awesome thanks joker i think with 3dmark score of 13000 we will hold onto our 20000+ R2's
looks very plastic i hope the m18x isn't and like the R2 -
m17x r3 rumors and m18x info
google FTW
Google Translate
Google Translate
CLiff notes: m17x r3 Nvidia Series 465 and 485, Ati series of 6870 and 6970.
M18x: TOP SECRET..not even Michael Dell knows about it all we know is BADD A** and Aluminum -
Read the links faiz23 posted. Faiz, we should move that link over to the M18x thread. Basically the guy posting in that thread works for Dell in China and he outright confirmed a few things:
1. M18x is coming, is constructed of aluminum (hallelujah) and the true successor to the M17x-R2.
2. M17x-R3 is the new M15x (who didn't know this) and is magnesium + rubber (again who didn't know this).
3. M18x will be a dual card system.
4. 6970M is imminent.
My advice: Don't buy an R3 yet, 6970M is due out very soon you guys will regret it.
Finally a comment by that Dell employee:
Google translation can be rough but what I got from that is, "Don't expect AW to become like every other cheap gaming notebook maker. We'll still bring out top of the line stuff (aka M18x)." -
reminds me when the Dell XPS m1730 had 8700gt SLI and after a while got 8800gtx sli which was a huge performance boost
-
Wait there is GTX465m???? typo i guess?
it would be crazy to get GTX460 over 6970 (as good as dual 460 easily) for pure gaming
I need Nvidia though because of 3D/Optimus/CUDA/Physx/Nvidia drivers.... this article saying GTX485m is coming to the M17X R3 though
-
I don't know if you guys caught it in the pics but this guys config has: 120 hz screen, 2820qm, gtx 460M and in the bios screen it says integrated graphics are not detected. Meaning no optimus for the 120hz version. -
Thinking of canceling my order and waiting for 6970m if Optimus was not available for the 3D version -
Once the R3 gets something better then the 460m this will be a very nice machine ...
Those card choices for a machine launching in 2011 were very underwhelming but yeah a 485m and or 6970 will be very slick..
Hopefully that 120hz option will be choice in the future for more then just the Nvidia cards..
Thanks for the pics though and i am really digging the smaller design ..
Adios M15x..
Joker is 1000% correct for anyone wanting the R3 if they can just to sit tight for the new/better cards.. 460m is not bad but yeah after owning one its not exactly great either .. -
wait what? no optimus for the 120hz and GTX460m combo?
-
Not sure if i want to turn battery life from average 5hours to 2hours just for 3D which I'll properly use very rarely (3D Movies/some games rarely i still rather play games without 3D) -
I just ordered the R3 last week. Is it easy to call and cancel the order, I have already recieved the bag for it though... If the ATI card is coming out very soon that kinda sucks.
-
Also another interesting fact
No optimus = No wireless HDMI thingy (Stream wireless your screen to your HDTV)
From m17x R3 Manual
Gonna wait for reviews seems like a mess <.>
-
Ok I'm mad now..I will return it once i receive mine, and re order one without the 3D..I need optimus more than I need the 3D..
-
schwweeeet....my magic 8 ball that inap lent to me is telling me we will be seeing heavily discounted m17x r3 in the outlet soon with nvidia 460m and 3d 120hz...mwahahahah...... =p
edit: lolz true story...one of the m15x i got was from the outlet was a forum member and had his screen tag on it..i still have the name plate somewhere lolz... -
^ lol
who knows if the one you'll buy is one that I returned.. -
"1. The new 17-inch product, which is the M17x-R3 after the Spring Festival in China will be listed on a single card, select 6970."
I looked it up and the Spring Festival is on February 2nd. So we could see the GPU upgrades by then =P. -
Do they say anything about CPU overclocking? I hope you are right about the springfestival release date because there is no sign of the R3 on the chinese dell site yet.
-
everyone who ordered the r3 will have time to return/exchange it if the new card is available in February. so, i wouldnt worry about it. I know I will if the new card is available soon.
-
if the 6970 comes out by feb, im getting dell to do an exchange on the GPU!
-
the GPU temp managed to stay below 70 in furmark. not bad for a 460GTX. most samples of the asus G73 seems to get around mid 70s.
-
But yeah, they said for gaming enthusiast, you should not get the R3 for now.But if you want thinner and lighter design,R3 is the way to go. -
Most of use would (obviously) use the Optimus energy saving tech everyday compared to the 3D feature. But we will also use the 120Hz screen everyday too. I'd like to see the 120Hz screen difference before I chuck my new R3 when it gets here.
Then compare the improvement of the 120Hz screen to the amount of power/heat improvment that Optimus provides.
Anyone have a comparison graphic/data link to a SB laptop with and without optimus enabled?
I wonder if that discount Dell gave with the 460 and 120Hz 3D screen/kit was to blunt some of the complaints and returns after customers figured out the lack of Optimus? -
Wow that r3 looks hella sweet with 3D. The optimus thing I think makes no difference with WiDi. As long as you have a 2nd generation core i processor along with the integrated intel hd and the intel wireless wifi card you can use the new WiDi Adapter coming out by netgear the PVT2000 I think is what its called. WiDi has nothing to do with dedicated Video cards.
I have a forum account with netgear though and I'm in the dark as much as any one else, I cant even figure out if my laptop will run WiDi from the experts which dont even know at netgrear. Miscomunication some where I gather that I cant seem to get through.
I do know though that there is only one adapter by netgear well 2 now that the new 2nd generation processors have came out that suport WiDi, there both from netgear. With the inclusion of the second gen core i processors comes the new adapter predecessor to the PVT1000, the PVT2000 which enables users to use 1080p If Im not mistaken different from the PVT1000 which only allowed 720p If im not mistaken hehe. -
So no-one thinks that both statements from the manual can be true and that you can have Optimus in the 3D R3. Granted maybe I for once am being optimistic about something but the way I see it is this: Streaming HDMI can only work with Nvidia cards with Optimus because it allows the lappy to swap to the integrated graphics which are the only thing that does the HDMI streaming. And under the 3D vision section of course they say Optimus isn't available because you'd want the 3D card to only be working during 3D operations. Granted like I say I'm speculating like the rest of you but I'm hoping I'm speculating in the right direction
-
Cool review and pics ! Maybe all the score were so low because it had to compute chinese first... Even SandyBridge can have a hard time with that
Just a little difference between the 16k 3dmark 06 posted by those leaked photos a while back.
I thought the g73 with the 460 posted 13-14k ? -

.... any chance i can get to educate the masses
-
I really want the M17xR3 if it really does come with a 6970M/485M. :O
I remember how everyone was so distraught after CES, but now the M17x R3 doesn't seem bad at all... -
-
the dell guy said that the laptop displayed support 3D, and at the same time the laptop was streaming FF movie to the HDTV..He also mentioned that the m17x can stream 3D video to the HDTV, but the wireless HD features will be available on February or March..
Now the big question left, does the combo of Gtx 460m and the 120hz screen support optimus? -
Might be good news with people with the new r3. insyde bios could well be customised and possible to unlock features that dell have locked up on the Phoenix secure bios on the r2's.
I just hope that the new m18x has the same bios on release. -
Thread updated with a lot of new gaming pics.
-
the SF4 in 3D looks epic..thanks for uploading that up
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I am interested to see what comes of the R3. It has ALOT of potential to be the king of single GPU laptops
-
i'm about to order one.
-
Cool pics that screen def doesn't look bad in screen shots. I just wish they would show wow. I know it's not an intensive game blah blah but IMO..., when there's a game that has 14 million people playing: EVERY review should have wow in it.
-
Those are fraps screenshots, the actual display was never depicted. So the screen will look as good as your display can reproduce it. -
Just as i thought, 120 Hz screen is much crisper and brighter than 60.
-
I don't know about you guys,
but i'd say judging from those images that the R3 looks even cooler than the R2. I thought the whole magnesium+rubber instead of aluminum would drag down the looks but i was wrong. I am very pleased. -
-
Can anyone read the settings on crysis ? I'd say alienware succeeded at 'the most immersive experience ever' with 10-20 fps . Maybe the 3d would keep you happy and help you forget the poor frames
