Hello everyone, I am new on this forum and have question about the material used in the new Alienware 17 models.
A couple days ago, what appears to be the rubber coating is starting to get loose!
I am positive this cannot be my fault as I barely transport my laptop and if I do I carry it around in a high qualty bag.
Furthermore, a friend of mine has the same laptop and his coating is getting loose as well and on different places than mine.
This has to be poor build quality, I will upload some pictures for more details.
I was wondering if this falls under garrantue, my laptop is a refurbished edition but I have Dell in-home support until 2015.

My friend's Alienware 17 from a retailer after two months, this guy owned several Alienware's and never scratched it:

Hi, I'm pretty sure that outlet machines have a 'nicks and scratches' disclaimer so you might have a problem, but certainly worth a call, it does look like a manufacturing defect...
-
Did you get a scratch and dent model?
-
When I received this laptop new in the box it was perfect-looking, from one day to another I noticed it was slowly getting loose.
I will update OP with pictures where my friend's material is getting loose as well (which is a retail product). -
Sounds like it wasn't a scratch and dent, just crappy rubber coating... I hope mine doesn't do that when I get it
-
Maybe it was manufactured more carefully on the 18's. -

You could try talking to dell and see if they can offer something.

I've had my 14 and 18 since october'ish and my 17 for a month. Non of them are showing any signs of use/rubber coating etc. granted I am very OCD when in use them. I wash my hands before using them to keep the body oil off and they are all in sleeves hen not in ise and double bagged/sleeved when transporting them.

Ah okay, well I guess I'll just call them when the warranty is transferred and hope for the best.

Mine is peeling as well....Along the top of the lid and front of the palmrest on the edges it is peeling off and progressively getting worse.
Haven't bothered to phone in yet, but I probably will soon. Just get them to send me new covers. -
Ah perhaps we could use this thread as proof it happens to more customers, could be useful. Let us know if you phoned them and they repaired it.

Mine is having a similar problem. The worst part is that I never touch it, except when I fix it on the table; because I ALWAYS use an external mouse and keyboard. I have noticed on one corner of the lid that its peeling of and as well on one left side / edge is started doing the same thing. It surprises me, because I always use it in a clean, dry and air conditioned room and seeing this problem is very disappointing...

Have had my since December nothing like this has happened. However I do not touch my laptop. Rarely ever move it from it's throne.

Looks like a much thinner coat then on the older models

So mine started doing this as well. I ended up calling AW and they sent me a new display cover, bezel and palm rest. I guess they classified it as accidental or whatever which falls in the accidental care warranty I have. God I love their warranties, but they should seriously look into this, it seems pretty common =/ I did the install myself and though tedious, it wasn't very difficult. Computer looks brand new again so I'll take a little better care of it and keep oils and such off and see how she holds up.

... just an update, corner on new display panel is already peeling, and I BARELY touch it... I'm not gonna go through that replacement process again, so I'm just gonna deal with it, but seriously, I hope their next revision uses better rubber.

Guys this has been posted before also...

I eventually had to contact them for a few small issues and I got some of it fixed. My keyboard was having squeaking keys issues especially on the space bar so I called in about that and while I was at it I sent him pics of the peeling palm rest. He agreed to replace the palm rest and the keyboard but they wouldn't let me replace the top for whatever reason, maybe because I was insisting on doing all the repairs myself as I don't trust their techs in my town.
There are a few retailers online that you can buy the body panels from but the top lid is absent from all of those placesand I am not sure what the exact part number is on it. It does not bother me as much on the lid as I don't see it unless the laptop is closed where as the palm rest was more noticeable.
I am interested to see if the new R2 models will suffer from the same defect.
Alienware poor build quality any fix?
