My alienware laptop arrived yesterday and I was told to use alien clone before I put In the SSd I bought separately, it did all the caching of files etc, then when it came to burning it kept spitting out the discs, data write DVD - r s , when a few of those wouldn't work I tried tuff disk , they didn't work either, went to the local supermarket and bought all they had DVD + Rws ( to be fair it then at least acknowledged that and said it couldn't burn to then , it was just spitting the discs out before that)
I went to device manager and checked drivers , says they are the latest ones installed, then when I tried playing blu rays it wouldn't play them either
Before I phone dell am I being an idiot and overlooking something simple?
(Going to call dell later regardless as I didn't get a mouse pad with mine which I'm gutted about)
Thanks

I don't think Windows can't natively play Blu-rays..
I think you gotta download software that can play Blu-ray movies... but I'm not sure, I download all my movies so xD -
lol thanks for the reply
anyone who bought a laptop recently get a mouse pad with it? -
Yup... me
-
Can it play CDs? sounds like a faulty drive tbh.
I got mine in november and it came with a mousepad as well. -
cds play, english dvds play
dell are saying its definitely not a faulty drive otherwise it wouldnt play at all (mine will play dvds and cds, not blu rays, dell are saying thats because i dont know blu ray software), it will not burn from alien respawn so ive reinstalled it, it burned disc one, but kept repeatedly rejecting the second disc, no errors or anything , just spat it out over and over lol
very bizzare -
Maybe VLC Media Player plays blurays?
Just google it. Download a program that can play Blurays, and you're set. -
Don't think vlc does, have that on my pc and it wouldn't play the Sherlock boxset I bought my wife , thanks for suggestion , a free blu ray player would be great, dell told me to download a trial version of power DVD 12 , that will help, but only untill the trial period is over
Mouse was in contents list, so hopefully dell will send one out -
Did they stop shipping units with PowerDVD 9.6 or later?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Any laptop that ships with a bluray drive from an OEM should ship with software for it, it sounds like a faulty drive or you have not loaded up the right program. Very odd.
-
I also received a M17x R4 yesterday and cannot play a bluray disk. it does not recognise it in the drive, it states i have a BD ROM drive on the computer, and i have powerdvd 9.6 shipped with it.
When i try and play from that it also says no disk in drive D. -
-
Are we saying that the powerdvd is not a bluray player software then?
Only it looks like it is meant to play Bluray disks.
The drive works and installs games, so im guessing its software related.
BTW yes it came with a mouse mat. -
-
And as for the mouse mat,'glad you got yours , I argued with 3 dell people yesterday who claimed you could only get a mouse mat if you bought it separately and it's never came with one, then I got told its in the list when you get order confirmation , think its down as "place mat"
-
Can someone post a picture and describe the mouse pad ( hard soft etc) that you get with the laptop so I can show it to a dell rep, it might help me get one they said ?
-
it is the following and i have received this with my laptop
Genuine Original DELL Alienware Mousemat Mouse Mat Pad Large , High Quality , Superb Gaming Mouse Mat , 23.5cm x 29.5cm , Brand New: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories -
Ive looked at cyberlink 9.6 it looks as though it should play blurays.

Guys, if you install Cyberlink PowerDVD 9.6 from the disc that shipped with your machine, you should be able to play Blu Ray Movies no problem. I just re-installed it on my 18x (from disc) and it works just fine. There is an update after installing it, you can check manually for any updates by clicking the "house/home" icon on the top right of the Cyberlink Window when the program is opened. It's a link to check for updates/offers so just click it, select the update and follow the prompts. File size is about around 90mb. I've just done this exact procedure and slapped a Blu Ray in and it works fine....maybe try it yourselves.

I tried it, reinstalled and updated and i still cant play blurays
-
Maybe they gave you a normal drive instead of a blu-ray drive

Weird - maybe check your Hardware ID's in device manager....this is what my drive shows: SCSI\CdRomHL-DT-STDVDRW BD_CA30N___A200 - also, maybe try a few different Blu Rays - sometimes some are really stubborn to read, afaik.

Are you guys trying to playback through Windows Media Player/center ? - If so, I don't think WMP/C supports Blu Ray Playback.
-
All I can think of is that you simply don't have... I dno a driver? Or just a player that supports BluRay discs.
-
i Have a bluray drive and Cyberlink 9.6, it asks me to setup 3d, so it must be bluray capable, ive tried 3 different blurays and it simply says no disk in drive d.
I am thinking of downloading a free trial version to see if it works that way. -

reinstalled again, after putting my older version on and it now works.
Cant say i have done anything to fix it, but i can now put the blurays in and its working.
