    Hello!

About 2 months ago i received my Alienware m17x and i absolutely love it!
However... two small bugs or.. small dots have appeared underneath the bottom center of the screen. They cannot be whipped away. Other small black dots have appeared underneath the screen, but they are not as noticeable.

They may not be that large, however once seen, they are hard to ignore.

    My questions are:

1). Will DELL replace my screen? ( I live in Denmark, and i did not purchase any further warranty, than that which you would usually get when buying their products ).
2). If yes, will i simply require the screen through mail, or must i send my beloved PC to DELL-Support?
3). If no, how can i remove these screen-invaders from my PC?
4). Is it possible to purchase a better screen, and replace it with my current screen, without any complications? ( Software, etc ).

Thank you for reading my post!

    - Jonathan

Hi, is it possible you can take a photo (zoomed in) on the problem?

I'd say that you should be able get dell to fix unless it's dead pixels where dell have a policy of just how many are considered acceptable. Dell's usual laptop warranty covers on-site repair so you should be able to get them to fix it at your home. A picture will help them to evaluate the issue - otherwise it will be a return to depot repair.
If you have the lower res display then the 1080 is a straight swap - but the 120hz is not an option unless you have an NV video card, and then you'll need a different cable as well. No software issues.

    Thank you for replying!
I am certain though, that these are not dead pixels, since they are "long". It is definitely bugs ( creatures ).

    Screen_bugs!.jpg

I will work on getting a higher quality photo up, but for now this is what i have got. ( My camera had a hard time taking pictures of my screen.
They are hard to make out and with the horrible quality these black spots kind of looks like blurry black dots. However when you see them IRL, they do not appear blurry at all. They look very... detailed?
Mousing over them does not make the cursor look odd ( I assume a dead pixel would ), instead it looks like these dots are "above" the cursor. Like there is a cap between them.
This assures me that these elongated "dots" are bugs, and not dead pixels. Also i have seen cases of bugs being stuck underneath LCD screens and such before.

Why do these bugs enter screens anyways? and how?
Is it due to fault in the product or craftsmanship? If not, is there a way them from entering your screen?

    Thank you so much! :)

Did you try tapping the screen? Sometimes dust gets stuck in between the LCD and the plastic cover which appears to be dead pixels or other things. Just give it a few nice taps with your fingernail or something and see if that helps.

    Sadly it is stuck :(...

It is not dust either, i am sure. Also the pc is rather new.

Thank you very much for the solution idea though! :)

Sure looks like something stuck in there but as you say it's difficult to see in a pic. I've never actually seen dead pixels so can't say how they appear just that it's does happen. I did see one person get what appeared to be condensation runs on the inside but from what i remember it went away after a couple of weeks.

I assume they have been there since you got it - you would expect electronic assembly areas to be 'clean' but with these things often being made in low-cost facilities in developing countries standards may well be lower. If you can't get a decent pic then all you can do is call it in and see what they say, it is a quality issue that needs to be resolved.

I had a dust speck appear between the monitor and its plastic cover a few weeks ago. It annoyed the crap out of me, and it wouldnt get unstuck tapping. But today its gone. I say give it a few days and see if they fall down by own force / gravity / randomness. It is kinda annoying that dust gets in there at all though. Hej

That is weird, I have no idea I'm afraid - time to make that call. I had my display replaced a few months ago and it was a quick call to get an engineer with a panel at my door :D

How did it go? If you haven't received any response on Dell's forum send me a PM and I'll make sure you do soon.

Original problem is weird... kind of looks like waterspots except on the inside... I would say unless you've dropped your laptop it isn't any fault of yours the annoying plastic screen covers are supposed to be glued completely around so no dust or anything should be getting in there. If it does then it was either already there before they glued it on or they did a bad job and it isn't sealed properly.

Can we address this problem as well though?

You've never seen a dead pixel? I mean granted I've repaired computers and electronics etc since I was like 12 so I've seen thousands of dead pixels but even ignoring that they are really common. Do you just not look for them? Because I mean in general you won't notice just one unless you're less than 6" from a tv or computer screen. Clusters of them can be seen from farther away.

Nope, guess I've been lucky. In my last job I was buying and issuing around 500 laptops a year and I've been a PC/network tech for 20 years - never seen it or had anyone point it out to me. My eye tests are OK so this problem seems to have passed me by ;)

Me too! I do know how common it must be since every manufacturer has rules around how many are considered 'acceptable'
