I'm trying to configure a m17x r3 with a hd6970 card but they keep telling me that the 460 is the only option. I had the 460m and it wasn't powerful enough, how did u guys get the 6970m?

Yeah, I got my replacement system, they shipped it with a 6870, I wanted the 6970. When I msg my guy and told them I would buy the card, he mentioned it would not be aviable till the end of July?

If your m17x-r3 is the 3D version then they are right. You can't upgrade it at the moment to anything else. The only other option is 485m from another vendor. Some people have done it, but you will loose 3D and you need to know what you're doing as it requires some tweaking with fan speeds and swaping heat sink etc.

Sounds like you need to talk to a different rep. They should be able to replace/upgrade you to any viable configuration, espetialy if you want to pay the difference. You're not trying to get a free upgrade, are you? :)

What a strange situation. By the end of the week, a Dell engineer is coming to replace my ATI 5870's with Nvidia 285m SLI cards in my R2! The R3 doesn't support the 285m? Weird.

My upgrade is costing around US$900. I have my own reasons my preference for Nvidia. Trying ATI was a costly mistake.

No I am not trying to get a free replacement.

I am returning my current laptop, which has the 3d bundle, and purchasing a laptop without 3d bundle and im trying to get the hd 6970 graphics card.

However, they wont give me the 6970 graphics card even though its available on the US site and many canadian purchasers of the m17x r3 have been able to get the 6970.

I've talked to 2 different sales reps, they have been trying to get me to buy the m18x instead which has the 6970 in crossfire, but I dont want to pay 800 more just for a gpu upgrade.

The r3 w/ 3d doesn't support any other graphics card other than the 460m right now, or so I've been told. I heard that the 560m might work but there isn't a large performance increase compared to the 460.

I don't believe the 485 is available yet otherwise id get that instead of teh hd6970

I wonder if they are trying to encourage people to get 460s so they can clear out the stock of old cards before the 560s come in?

Hmm, so you are calling a rep and telling him that you want to return your laptop and then placing a new order with the 6970m with the same rep?? Highly unlikely that a rep will do that, they will do anything to get you to keep your system, so first call and tell a rep that you want to return your system and then call another rep placing a new order, or call a rep and ask if you can place an order with the 6970m and after he confirms it is available then tell him about your situation.

Yeah, Dell reps are lying scumbags and will do anything to make sure you don't return, that includes lying

Jack, why don't you ask to be refunded and just recorder with the config you want.
Try multiple reps till you get what you want.

From what i understand, the 3d laptop comes with a 120hz screen, something the 6970 doesnt support, according to Alienware.....

Yes I did manage to find one that will get me the 6970 card however they fail to see that I need the refunded credit first before i can purchase the card.

In any case, im happy with what they're offering me except that the laptop is going to be 200 more than my current laptop even though im downgrading the 3d screen, 2720 to 2630, and 6gb to 4gb.

I may opt to wait before purchasing another laptop to see if any better deals come out.

Do you find that the 460 is not that great of a card? I was thinking of ordering a R3 but still debating on the CPU, GPU, and type of hard drive I want to get. Any suggestions? Is there honestly any HUGE difference, besides an inch of screen size, when comparing the M17x R3 to the M18x?

    Harsh, brutal truth right there.

They will also lie about everything else. Coupon limits, any guarntees, promises to call you back with information.

Some Canadian sales representative called Kantha Stalin (pray to god you don't get this donkey, if you do, give me a PM and I'll give you a number with an extension for someone sane) guaranteed me the order was going to arrive before the twice delayed estimated shipment date. Apologized and explained his regret, only to say the same thing a month later when my order is still in production.

As for the OP, return the laptop, wait until your credit is refunded and then purchase like nothing ever happened. Don't even tell them your going to buy another Alienware, because they WILL lie. I was bribed a $350 dollar coupon when I asked to refund my m15x (they also told me their authorized coupon limit was $75 dollars, then $100 dollars, then $125 dollars, within a 5 minute time frame).
