OK, here is the observation and following conclusion that confuse me:

Observation 1. In the case color thread in this forum, the ratio of people who like Nebula Red and people who like Black is about 4:6
Observation 2. During my 20 days' continuously watching the dell outlet store, I only see the M17x r3 laptop with Nebula Red color once! The others are all stealth black. So, M17x R3 in outlet store, Red:Black would be about 1:50

Assumption 1. People who like Nebula Red will buy a Nebula Red one, and vice versa.
Assumption 2. Dell will not change the case color for the returned M17x r3 laptop.
Assumption 3. Most customer return their M17x r3 due to performance issue(not color)

So here comes my conclusion(which make no sense? )

M17x r3 with Nebula Red color in general have much better product quality than the one with Stealth Black...

    What do you guys think?

I doubt there is much of a difference in product quality. They are the same product, just different colored soft-touch plastic. Your assumption is faulty in that most people order black to be professional or out of personal preference. Nebula red is more of a standout, saying to the public that yes, you are a gamer. More blacks are ordered by far, hence more blacks=more chance of a black getting returned.

    Hi Killerbunny,

That's a very good point but not strong enough to convince me. I mean, if you are right, then it's means that more than 95% percent customers end up buying a black one regardless their personal preference.

But is that really the case? I mean, according to the signature of this forum member, there are a lot of people ordered Red one, which doesn't fit the supposed 5% ratio...

I doubt build quality would differ between would differ substantially. They are just two different colors of plastic; which would not affect the function of the laptop. You are basing your views of a thread on this forum, and while many alienware owners are on here, not all of them chime in (I haven't on that thread) or are even members of this forum. This forum only represents a fraction of all alienware users.

I would just chalk it up to a random bad luck that you did not come across another nebula red during your monitoring of the outlet. But the outlet is based on returns, so a bunch of blacks may just have defected then, and quite possibly a ton of reds could defect and show up now, no one knows.

Some people do change the color of their laptop, because dell sometimes has the nebula red on backorder, and people change just to speed up things. In the case of a replacement, dell might have a black with the exact same specifications, and would skip that instead of a red one if a red one was unavailable

I think people that are more likely to be on this forum are those that are:

A: Generally more tech savvy than the average consumer
B: We know what we are ordering, if we wanted a business (read: black) laptop, we'd get a Lenovo
    C: Gamers

I think all of those are more likely to pick the red color because we're all pretty used to the standard black and silver cases that all computers and laptops come in, so we're more likely to order something different.

On the note of quality, I dont think the black is necessarily lower quality, but with the sheer number of them being ordered they are more likely to be noticed with a quality issue simply due to volume. And just as KillerBunny mentioned, the volume of black machines being returned is probably pretty close to the ratio at which they are bought.

Btw, mine is Nebula Red also.

Well, I only ordered black because:

    A: Yes, it is professional.
    B: Shows less dirt
C: I don't want my laptop sticking out in public....
D: Red is ugly in my opinion, especially on a laptop.
E: The Red on the R3 is rubberized, so it looks more pink lol.
