The Alienware website says that both the M17x and M15x are anodized aluminum, but people on this forum seem to unanimously refer to them as being made of magnesium.

Is there something I'm missing, or is one of these groups just wrong?

The m17x r2 is most definitely anodized aluminum. The m15x is magnesium. The m17x r3 is soft touch plastic with mangesium underneath (i believe).

Hope that clears up some things.

Actually the M15x is also aluminum. I should know, I stripped mine down to the bare aluminum :D The only magnesium part in the M15x is the plate that goes between the keyboard and motherboard.

The R3 case is composed of this magnesium alloy not only on the inside but it also makes up the outer shell. The older R2's anodized aluminum case demonstrated itself as very sturdy and the R3 maintains the same level of sturdiness with a thinner case.
