    Hey all,

Just reporting in with another dead 7970m. It will work in safe mode but not windows (freezes, locks-up after login). It was v1.1 and did beautifully until after GTA V.

    Lifespan - under 2 years
Had also started to show purple on bios screen and horizontal lines weird graphics corruption.

Luckily I have 6990m from old days installed it and all very well and back to normal for now. :)
May purchase a 7970m or is there anything better out there for an old m17xr2?

    TIA :)

I had same behaviour with 6990M. vRAM is damaged or unsoldered. AMD Factory defect on all 6990M/7970M. I've replaced vRAM and sold that crap on ebay. Don't know if 780M/880M will work in your lappy but it's worth mentioning as it's stable and powerful

    Update

Continue to get freeze lock ups even with 6990m after windows 7 boots up and BSOD.

I recall back to what I recently installed.
    You wouldn't believe it...
    MSI afterburner....

Wll monitor next 24 hrs for stability and then reinstall the 7970m if all good.
I can't believe this one software has caused so much problems for me and BSOD etc etc

That's weird. Check the BSOD log and error to ensure that GPU is not damaged because it's uncommon to MSI afterbuerner to generate BSODs

    Back in business.
    The 7970m(reinstalled) lives...... LoL :)

Yup it's nastyware MSI afterburner(back to fraps) certainly caused havoc on both my 7970m and 6990m.
Removed and everything is now sweet.
Thnx for your replies(very long day diagnosing, removing, testing) :)

May I ask what versions of MSI afterburner you were using? Also MSI afterburner wouldn't explain the graphical corruption in the bios?

The graphical corruption is normal after all I get the white bleach phenomena(bootup) with this 7970m card and there are ways I have learned around this. I have yet to get any of those graphical corruptions since reinstalling the 7970m but they were present whilst MSI afterburner was installed but very random but getting worst (in the last week or so). The main issue though was the lock-ups entering windows. My system was frozen no keyboard input no mouse movement it was like dead and then BSOD would appear.

I don't like this software and have resorted back to FRAPS. Still liked the temp monitor in-game and may need to find something else that can show that aside from MSI afterburner not sure if this exists.

I am using same 4.10 and I used same 4.10 with Radeon 6990M (jesus I hate this name) and it worked for a long time. My system was Windows 8.1 x64 in both scenarios.

Using Msi afterburner ( disabling everything but the fps monitoring ) then coupling it with hwinfo to give you all the temp readings should not cause any issue. I could screen shot you some of my settings. I essentially disable MSI afterburner and only use the riva tuner portion for its 64 bit support etc.

You need to resolder vRAM connections to the board or let someone do this. It will work forever after that done right.
