Tried afew out in the last couple of days, just wondering what everyone else uses, either Free or Paid, not too fussy, just want something that gives good security aswell as not hampering the machines performance.

Viruses are under control by Windows itself. The main problem for Windows at these days are the Malwares, Malwarebytes does a great job when scanning but, only the paid version has real time protection.

I use the free Microsoft/Windows one now. Seems to have as many features as Norton without the headache.

Microsoft Security Essentials.

NOD32 by Eset

Microsoft Security Essentials is all you need. Free lightweight and does a great job.

MSE here.
Only problem with it is that it takes FOREVER to run a full system scan, but it's lightweight and has all the features you need. -
May take some criticism here, but i use Macafee. Got ot free for four years so I use it. You can set it to use minimal resources. I have it scan once a week at like 4am. When I have it scan at that time, it doesn't use minimal resources because I set it up like that. It knocks out a scan of all 3 of my hdds pretty quick. Especially since I use throttle stop and the cpu is loaded at 50% and holds at 3.5ghz. I like the program. I like the firewall and realtime scanning, as well as the other stuff it comes with.

Check this out. Rubenking is one of the recognized experts in the field. The Best Antivirus for 2012 | PCMag.com The Best 2012 Security Suites | PCMag.com. In spite of popular myth, Norton is, and has been for some years, one of the top-rated AV choices. I have used it for years with complete success. Years ago it went through a bad patch after it was acquired by Symantec, but that was long ago. I am now using MSE for this R3 because all 3 Norton licenses are in use on other computers, and I wanted to see how the current MSE performed. To me, MSE is decent, but lightweight from a feature standpoint. The AV tests generally award it good to average rankings. So, while serviceable, I don't understand the enthusiasm for MSE in these forums, other than the fact that it's free. It's not bad, it's just not great by most measures and certainly not a top tier option.

There are 2 thoughts on this. People that want just anivirus or a suite. Most antivirus software are suites with other programs built in besides just antivirus causing them to be called bloat ware. MSE is one of the best free antivirus/anti spyware software out there. Reason being is Microsoft has taking a beating for a long time for being a virus breeding ground.
In comes MSE which started as a anti spyware program called defender(rebadged Program from a company called Giant) and is now standard in Windows 7. Microsoft couldn't release a product that didn't work or their name would be dragged through the mud. I use it on all my windows machines and my family's and we have not had a issue at all.
Now in the corporate enviroment Macaffe and Symantec(Norton) are a the standards since they work very well.
This all being said use all our opinions as guides and make your descison based on your research and what seems to the the best decision for you.
Good luck -
I myself use Norton Internet Security.
You will find that everyone has favorites in various areas. Your best bet is to try them all yourself, one at a time.
There are other tools that can help you out such as MSERT which is a great but you need to redownload every 10 days or so.
There's the old favorites like spybot search and destroy, ad aware, malwarebytes,
Inform yourself with sites like snopes, blackviper's guide w processes, uscert, etc.
As fair warning, you will find quirks with almost every application whether it's antivirus, antimalware, firewall, etc. Some of these will drastically impact on resources, boot time, drivers. Each computer can act differently so what will work on one with no problems may not be the same with others.
As revelator pointed out don't just assume based on rumor how good a product is or isn't. Try them out, you may find a favorite of your own based on your needs. -
