We just got this laptop yesterday. It looks amazing so far. However, it's video performance playing/raiding in World of Warcraft leaves much to be desired. I only see FPS of 20 or less (30 if I'm lucky.) I have the ATI 1G Radeon Mobility HD 5870 video card (driver is up to date) and all patches, and windows updates are "updated." Has anyone encountered this problem and could lend me a hand?

You are probably in stealth mode. Check that out.

I play WOW with settings on maximum except for shadows (medium) and I have more than 60 FPS in Dalaran/Raiding.

How do I check that? I think my husband might have put me in stealth mode while screwing around with buttons....

Press the stealth mode button and see if it makes a difference while playing.

to this day I still can't figure out if I'm in stealth or not, but you can try using the utility from here

just unzip into a folder, and run it, no installation required, if the icon is green you're not in stealth, if its red you are. You can exit it afterwards

Apart from that, fn+f7 (sometimes) toggles between graphics cards

*The stealth mode is utter insanity.
*The stealth message about turning off and on is hard to follow.
*It switches to stealth within a few minutes of turning on.
*Stealth mode cancels wifi which is really dumb if you are surfing the net.
*Go into Catalyst Control Center and switch to advanced view. Where possible give control to application. You have some control over performance/quality with these settings. I agree with Joe you are probably in stealth.
*Stealth mode button is the gas guage on extreme right.

*If you are surfing the net and using page up and down it is very easy to hit the stealth key by mistake.

Mine doesn't by default, nor did my initial dell installation. Either way, you can adjust the settings in command center

see the farthest right touch button right above the end key? That's the stealth mode button. Press it and a window will pop up asking if you wish to enable stealth mode. The acutal wording is that 'access it detected' , it can be a bit confusing since it doesn't specifically say enable or disable, however to do both you have to click yes. If it's enabled a 'stealth mode' logo will appear via the alienware OSD, and when it's disabled, OSD will pop a message on the task bar telling you that full power mode will be enabled.

Wow is much more CPU and memory than GPU intensive that said it will help having the duel GPU's. The new Cat coming out will use the quard core and the CF, SLI more in the graphics. Hard to beat 60 FPS anyway you look at it. :D

How do you know that Cataclysm will use the quad-core and XF/SLI more? I have not read any blue post about that.

I didn't hear that either. That would require an entire API rebuild which I doubt they have done considering the amount of time between WOTLK and CAT.

Here is some recent news on the higher end cards that will be used.
Blizzard has included an updated DirectX path in the latest beta of its upcoming World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, bringing DX11 to WoW.

Ya can enable DX11 in Cata, but its not that much more exciting.. Infact. it removes textures from water and such.. Its buggy as hell right now.. As for 60FPS and can't go higher, disable V-Sync in your options.. I get over 140FPS almost anywhere except Dalaran (Which is normal as the lag causes FPS to drop).. I am on 2x4870's and a i7-920, but if i play with 1 4870 disabled, I still get over 90FPS.. Make sure V-Sync is off and turn down shadows.. Shadows in WoW are a big FPS killer and its not very pretty on full anyways.. Go down a notch or 2..

I find it amusing when people talk about 100+ FPS on a 60Hz screen.

That being said, I'm probably picking this game up soon. Maybe when the new expansion releases. I have 3 85s in EQ1 and 2 90s and an 80 in EQ2. Think I'm about EOL on those games and need something new.

The only time my integrated card activates is when my machine is not plugged into a power source. To re-enable the discrete cards I go into the Bios, very simple and quick.

Oh and I am on a WoW hiatus until Cata is released. I took 3 months off from WoW last summer but otherwise have been playing nonstop since 2006. I am looking forward to becoming a Troll Druid and using magic mushrooms FTW !!
