I'm thinking about reinstalling on SSD, then the thought of installing win8 came up. How good is the compatibility for win8? I heard some good news and some bad news. Metro thing I wouldn't have minded if the structure isn't setup as part of metro though. Wish they just give an option to remove it completely.

My bad... Thanks for the info, but it doesn't seem enough info though, although it's good to know that all important drivers work. Will wait until 2013 and see.

As of right now, there is a modification that will remove Metro, I had to do it to use my T60 properly with a test of Windows 8.

Windows 7 drivers work with Windows 8, and hence there's no reason why Windows 8 won't work on any machine with Windows 7. Now the drivers may not be optimized, that is to be expected with a beta OS.

Been using Windows 8 RTM with my M17xR4 for quite a while now. Simply ROCKs. Metro looks gorgeous at 1080p - 120hz! Loving it.

Drivers for Win7 do work fine. NVidia has also released a Win8 WHQL driver for their notebook GPUs which are also great and working fine.

I'm qualified for the early upgrade on W8 but I don't know if I will actually install it or not. Probably will install it on a spare HDD and try it out. Honestly, I'm not very impressed with what W8 is capable of. It sounds more interesting on the tablets side though.

I run Win 8 for a month already without problems, playing SC2, ME3 and tried XCom Enemy Unknown, all running well as on Win 7. Also absolutelly no problem with drivers, just had to disable IGP for Catalyst 12.8, but I saw already couple of solutions to this on the forum. Just dont need IGP that much :)

Apparently everything (startups, sleep, shutdown, etc.) except gaming got a significant speed up, except file transfer which they say wasn't faster because they used a different mechanism which checks the file for malicious code during transfers.

i think its great its much faster than windows 7 the performance increase is very noticeable particularly on start-up takes 8 seconds for my machine i don't even have a SSD. and for that reason i think its worth a go. Everyone always complains i dont like metro start screen but while i was using win 8 for over 3 months i rarley used it. Gaming wise there no change i had a slight issue early on with COD waw due to punkbuster but i got that fixed. Drivers wise i had no problems when i had my 6990m at the time but have had to since reinstall windows 7 due to my laptops GPU breaking which was replaced by a gtx580

I have been using Windows 8 for a few months and I love it. You run it with Start8 and it is an awesome OS. I love all the bonuses that Windows 8 has and all of the things they did cleaning up the OS, but I am not a huge fan of that Metro interface. With Start8 you get control again and it is pretty darn awesome.

Windows Key + X is an awesome shortcut BTW

For those of you who aren't liking Metro, my request is to stick with it for a while. You'll find that it really grows on you after some time and then you find the old Start Menu a pain to work with.

(It's quite like when win95 was introduced, I remember a lot of folks cribbing about losing Program Manager [if you're old enough to remember what that was :) ]. but the UI became the most used user interface in the world for around 20 years (1995-2015))

I don't really mind, but the structure seems setup that unlike older OSes desktop seems structured within metro and I have to keep it open all times, plus everything in 8 is so tablet. Hopefully it's not another vista. I know a lot of developers are expressing hate for win8 though.

I had it on my m17x R3 for about a month. It worked perfectly. I loaded Borderlands 2 a week ago and the LCD just completely flipped out on me. It changed the resolution to 1024X768 and started blinking on and off. The only way to get it to stop was to press the power button, let the computer go to sleep, and wake it back up. I formatted and went back to Win7. I have no time for that kind of stuff. May try it again after it gets SP1. Interface is a little strange but it all works. I just don't have time for weird bugs right now so I decided to go back to something that is tried and true.

I'm debating on if I want to side off some space on my SSD for this or install it to the HDD on my second drive. What's the space requirement and which do you think I should do.

    SSD = 256GB (~170GB free right now)
    HDD = 750GB (~450GB free right now)

Wouldn't that mean Borderlands 2 had an issue - not Windows 8? :)

Maybe you need the B2 update rather than waiting for the SP1 of Win8. :D

Quite possibly so. However, I would rather run Win7 and play Borderlands 2 than run Win8 and wait on a fix. It could have been a problem with the video driver or the game. I'm not really sure. I just decided that if everything I want to run doesn't work perfectly, then I'm out.

I'm very surprised no one mentioned the incompatibility with a lot of newer games. Which to me is the main reason why I won't install this on my R3. I made the upgrade on my home PC to Win8 Pro and found that the following games stopped working due to incompatibility issues. (And yes I tried running all of them as admin and in all compatibility modes with no success):
A few examples of games are:
    - Super Streetfighter IV Arcade Edition
    - Streetfighter X Tekken
    - Transformers: Fall of Cybertron
    - The Darkness 2
    - Rayman Origins (boots but no black screen and audio only)
    - Flatout Ultimate Carnage
    - Bastion (boots but no black screen and audio only)
    - Dead Space 2 (boots but no black screen and audio only)

Until I figure out if these are graphics card driver issues or what I'm gonna hold off.

What driver did you use? I think Nvidia just recently released the 306 WHQL drivers for Windows 8 which I would assume should work.

I will admit that I just updated to 306 a few days ago and haven't tried these games since the update. I will try them again tonight. There's some others that have mentioned these games require patches from the game manufacturers directly however I'm not certain if this is true. Thankfully all games released in the next month or so I would assume will have to be Windows 8 compatible out of the box.

    EDIT:
Tried same games after applying NV 306 drivers. Seems it fixed a couple, all the ones that gave me audio and black screen. Both Streetfighters, Flatout and Transformers 1 & 2 still crash.

    Better than nothing I guess.

all my games work but theyre running on my hd graphics 3000 from intel. The gameplay is very choppy. Im assuming i need to find the right catylist driver to allow my computer to run on my amd radeon hd 6900m series. Im not computer savy enough to find the right drivers. Im about to go back to win7 if this doesnt work out. Any idea which driver is good for my compter?? Much appreciated..

Borderland 2 worked perfectly on mine.

Google search with this " borderlands 2 on windows 8 ".

Looks at the first 2 links skidrowgames and unblocked piratebay

    You Gold lies there.

Its upgrade is smooth but it will give you some glitches too. I did a fresh install. This OS has been the most trouble free for me.

I have posted message on Bluetooth drivers too. search for the thread on windows 8.

Try redownloading the package or getting the 12.9 beta drivers from the AMD site. Your package appears to be corrupt. The error you are getting is from WinRAR and isn't the drivers themselves.

The Windows 8 Enterprise trial is available at Microsoft's website. Besides Technet/MSDN and a few other channels that is the only way to get it legally right now. I'm able to get my license through Technet.

EDIT: Forgot to mention if you install the Enterprise trial you will have to reinstall when General Availability hits later in the month. The Enterprise version won't activate a retail key.
