I'm considering a 3920xm to my 17r4 just wishing to push it to its peak since I'm going to live with it for 5 years and ivy is supposed to be the last generation CPU that I can put in.
My concern is that someone says 17r4 won't be able to handle this beast regarding to its high temperature even without overclocking. So I'm wondering if anyone here actually owns a 3920 in their 17r4, could you please tell me how is that like? :)
    Thx

    overkill. so is 16gb ram.

you won't notice much performance difference with normal usage and gaming. now if you were rendering or doing some heavy cpu intensive computations, then sure it might knock a few seconds off..

may i ask what exactly it is you use your R4 for? and how is the 3720qm too slow for you?

you might want to just upgrade to a SSD instead... you will definitely notice the performance increase (windows bootup time, load time for all programs and games) versus the 3920xm cpu upgrade. which i might add is super overpriced in relation to the amount of increase in performance.

I have to agree with JayYang9. Also i run my 3720QM at OC 40,39,38,38 and temps on the CPU reach 84c at max, but when benchmarking as high as 94C. For one, the 2pipe Heatsink in the R4 is crap for the CPU (GPU the 3pipe sink is great tho!). If the CPU was on a 3pipe config then maybe down the road for a 1/4 of the price i would go for the XM.

Similar to mikecacho, I'm running a 3720QM at 40,39,38,38 and it can pretty much only sustain a 3.4 or 3.5Ghz load. Any higher and the temps go up too much causing the CPU to throttle back to the aforementioned clocks. So, I don't see any point to an Extreme CPU.

I have to agree. If you cannot keep the temps any lower than that with the 3720QM at 3.5GHz under load, then an XM CPU is not going to be useful. I love XM processors, but they do require more effective cooling to be of any benefit. If the CPU begins to throttle due to uncontrollable temps you may even see a drop in performance with the more powerful CPU.

    I have 3920XM install on a M17x R4, along with AMD 7970m.

It works very nice, the only draw back I can think of is the full potential of 3920XM is not released with M17x.
With the unlocked BIOS from slv7, level 1 overclock can be handled flawlessly.
Still testing level 2 overclock, will report back if I find it to be stable.

please provide temps after vantage run on stock xm, and oc vantage run with that cpu im really curious as to what temps your pulling under heavy load, also what thermal paste did you use?

I also have 3920xm in M17x R4. It runs hotter than my 3740qm did but I'm using OCZ freeze heatsink paste and I'm able to sustain great clocks during gaming. My multipliers are 44x1, 43x2, 42x3, 41x4. That;s the highest I've been able to go so far without instability. Very demanding 3D gaming results in mid-80's max temps and a 100% CPU stress test in the Intel XTU platform reaches 93c tops in about 40 seoncds. Then it throttles down to ~3.7GHz - but it is able to sustain ~4.1GHz during gaming. This is accomplished by setting 65w TDP in svl7's unlocked BIOS v.A10 for the unit.

I have further cooling mods planned for the near future, including a fan upgrade to something with a higher CFM output.
Right now my limitation, aside from heat, is that I've been unable to get my CPU vcore above 1.331volts in the M17x. I've seen screenshots of this same CPU in the M18x operating at ~1.5vcore max so I agree that its full potential may not be reachable in this unit, but it IS faster than the 3740qm and my M17x CAN handle the processor. I would imagine yours would handle it on the level 3 overclock setting as well, since I've already exceeded that with near-stock voltage.
