I was looking around for a review of the 1600 x 900 display, but I really don't see any around. So by that alone, should I just opt for the 1920 x 1080, or would I be fine with the 1600 x 900?

The screen will be used, but not a lot since it will be connected to a 55in plasma or used to surf the net from time to time.

Like you said yourself, you will not use the laptop screen an awful lot, so I would just stick with the 900. Most people get the 1080 for gaming I believe. For general browsing, 900 is completely fine.

Anything less than 1080p I find to be very annoying to use. Extra scrolling, even in a web browser, sucks in my opinion. And, 1080p is barely good enough for frequent Excel users.

What system are you asking about? This is posted in the main Alienware forum and probably needs to be moved to a relevant sub-forum.

You are asking about the M17x, right? I haven't anything to say about the 1600x900 screen, not having seen it (not available in my region), but I would honestly recommend the 1080p screen. Anything less than 1080p can seem rather wasteful on a 17" screen, and the M17x has the power to drive it.

Also, you mention it'll be frequently connected to a 1080p screen - So, having the internal 1080p screen makes it far easier to duplicate the screens (you cannot duplicate a 1080p display with the 1600x900 option, so you will get an upscaled 1600x900 display on the TV) or extend them more seamlessly.

Note that if you are asking about the M18x, my statements still remain relevant. And truthfully you'll probably enjoy the extra resolution and space when browsing the web. And in general, Alienware seems to use lower (image) quality panels for the lower resolution option.

Thank you for the replies, and yes this was for a m17xR4. My main reason for asking was I saw a nice system on outlet with a 7970, and I was going to pull the trigger. However the only thing not quite right was the display.

So I put this thread in and left for the day thinking it would be there later (since it was there for at least 2-3 days) however now its gone :(

Once again, thank you for the replies and it shows up in the future, I will surely grab it :)

I have the 1600x900 screen on my M17x R3. Works just fine. When I play games I use my 55' LED at 1080p.

I have a 1080p panel on order for my r3 right now. I'll do a comparison when I get it installed. My buddy has an r3 with the 1080p panel and it blows my crappy 900p one out of the water. I would go with the upgrade so you don't regret it later. ;)

1080P will also help resale value so I'd go for the upgrade.

I once had a fortunate (or rather, unfortunate) opportunity to compare 1600x900 & 1080p screens.Dell tech came to replaced my faulty 1080p LCD but brought the wrong one (1600x900) instead.
It was only discovered after he left, & only then I realised what a huge difference it made compared to my original 1080p LCD.
Needless to say, I had the Dell tech replaced it with the correct part the next day before I start losing sleep over it. :)

Well I prefer the 900 for gaming. 1080@17 is just too small for me. Framerates are better on a 900 at native resolution. My eyes cannot take 1080 on anything less than a 22" display. If you try to run a 1080 at lower resolution for framerate it looks like crap. I think what feels best to the end use is what really matters.

Hey, I have the 1600 x 900 and I was wondering about upgrading it, and if you don't mind answering, how much was the 1080p upgrade? Also, how would you go about ordering one?

I went through a seller on eBay and paid around $125. He might still have a few. Search for alienware m17x r3 screen and they should pop up. If you order through dell though, your looking at paying $700. :(
