My lappy got it's screen spidered in an unfortunate travel incident, TSA went through my bag and put my carefully wrapped laptop at the top of the pack with the top of the laptop towards the outside... Still waiting to hear if they will fix.replace it but meanwhile I'm considering fixing it myself, since I expect they will tell me to go pound salt.

Anyone done the replacement surgery themselves? How hard? Where did you buy the panel? How expensive?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

I believe due to the edge to edge glass built in it's tricky, try looking up on youtube.

You would be better off to buy the whole assembly, something like this ** Alienware M17x R3 R4 17.3" Full HD 1920 x 1080P LED LCD Screen MGNC7 / VCV1F | eBay This way is much easier, few screws, unplug a couple wires and your good to go. I have done it this way myself so if you go this route, I'd be glad to help.

As Meaker said it's pretty tricky to replace just the screen itself. The plexiglass that is in front of the screen when removed, will never look the same again applying it back to a new screen, and re-assembling it.

Or wait it out and see if TSA will pay to have it fixed. I wouldn't hold my breath on that though.

Ok thank you all. At a minimum now I have the part number for the assembly, tho at almost $300 to get a refurb screen sent to me I'm not sure it's wroth it to me. I might just wipe it and put it up on ebay to fund a replacement....

It will probably involve replacing the top housing as a complete unit which is usually what happens with screen replacements with edge to edge covers.

If you buy the super thin double back tape it's not too difficult to replace just the screen espcially if it's already broken. The biggest hassle is removing the plexiglass front bezel without breaking it but you can do that relatively easily with a heatgun. It is much simpler to replace the entire housing though and if you spider webbed the screen then odds are there are quite a few broken clips and likely a cracked frame as well which is generally all additional cost on top of the panel itself. You can buy 1920x1080 housings on eBay for $150-180 pretty regularly or $200-220 without waiting for lower postings. I recently got one for around $140.

If you decide to just sell it with the broken screen, what price range would you be wanting for it?
