Good evening all,
I bought Borderlands 2 a few weeks ago in the steam summer sale and I got around to firing it up today.....that's about as far as I got because it won't run worth a damn....It starts up and immediately starts fram skipping i think? it plays then chops, plays, chops, and so on endlessly.
Basically I am asking if anyone else has played with a 7970m and what their results were because according to the recommended specs I shouldn't be having any trouble playing this and as it stands right now it isn't even remotely close to playable right now.
Thanks in advance.

yea im having poor optimization with my 7970m too. frame drops and stuttering.
try to disable physX. -
I couldn't see an option to disable it
, just turn it to low.

Hey Mog, try the new 13.8 Drivers, they attempt to remove the Frame Stuttering and Skipping accross all games within the 7970M card. Despite being in beta, they're doing a wonderful job. It says it supports Direct X 10 and 11, but I feel a few Direct X 9 games have had modifications regardless.
It has erridicated my stuttering and skipping across well known games such as Skyrim, Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed and others.

Let us know how it goes. -
Yep that did it, thanks
Weird, I just upgraded to 13.6 not that long ago too and thought they were working pretty well. Seems like 13.6 just came out, I never thought there would be more betas already. I have not had a chance to play it yet but just loading it up there is an immediate improvement, seems smooth and clear, I can actually see the menu without it chopping all over the place.
Guess we can call this one solved -
Glad I could help

Well this is weird...I played the game for an hour last night and it ran flawlessly....I try to run it again today and it is back to chopping.....does that make any sense?
Gonna try rolling back to 13.4 and see what that does....
I tried changing everything in the video settings and saw no change whatsoever, the GPU is sitting about 60% load so it isn't like the card can't handle itJust seems like bad drivers.....stupid Nvidia optimization.
UPDATE: Tried 13.4 and those also failed....I am pretty much at a lose, I can't see reverting back to 12.X helping at all. Going to go back to 13.8 and try that again since it was working, albeit breifly on those drivers. Something seems off about it working and then not.....almost as if something else is causing a problem but I can't think of what might be causing it, I already tried killing the sound, changing every video setting and trying it in windowed/full screen or full screen window mode all of which do nothing. I am starting to wonder if it is stemming from it being installed on the 2nd hdd.....
I will try it again when I get home from work on my desktop 6950 and see what that yields....
Update 2: It is working again....I am at a lose lol. I updated back to 13.8 beta and that did nothing, I changed nothing else and restarted again for the 20th time. The only thing that I didn't do the same was I ran steam in offline mode and fired it up, ran beautifully for an hour or more. Last night steam was in online mode so I can't see that doing much.... -
Disable physx. It sounds like you are trying to use physx. I play this game with the desktop 4670k and GTX 780 and even I drop to 30fps when running max physx and 2560x1440. On a laptop with an AMD card the framerate will be slaughtered. My m17x r4 with 7970m runs the game maxed out (No physx) at 1920x1080 at a solid 40-60fps. Runs a bit slower if I try and run it at 2560x1440 on the laptop so I don't even bother when I have a desktop.

this is what im getting at its worst.
im running a 7970m on 13.8 beta driver

at best, im getting 100+ fps at worst 3 fps.
i got everything turned to high except for physx. this game ran better on a 260m sli setup. -
PhysX would not allow it to run just fine 1 in every 10 attempts though.....
I have it turned down as far as it will go, unless I am missing something else , it does not go beyond low, I don't see an off option.
Edit: Found the problem....it chops while I have an active internet connection, as soon as I kill the connection it runs fine and goes back to normal. I can unplug my phone ( Tethered ATM ) and as soon as I unplug it the game starts running normally, if I re-enable tethering it instantly starts chopping in game when it comes up and I will point out I play plenty of games online and this is the only game I experience this with. Last night when I first posted I was on my home wifi, so it isn't a tether problem either.
Oh well...it runs fine as long as the net is off lol......so as long as I apparently don't want to play multiplayer it will run fine.
Solution found: General consensus seems to be that the game does not handle USB tethering.....at all. Despite every other game I have working fine lol....Others have had the problem but I had to narrow the problem down before i could find the right solution. Although this does not really explain why I was having trouble connected to my router last night at least I can play it single player with this kinda crappy workaround. I can also plug in hard lined and that should work according to what I am reading from others.
Edit3: Turning my phones into a wireless router fixes it as well..... instead of using the USB tether option. Still not sure about the router. -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
thats a really weird issue, but I'm glad you got the choppiness straightened out.

Hackintoshihope AlienMeetsApple
So what we are thinking maybe a patch from the developer would fix this? or how it handles the internet connection differently, maybe windows fault?

Anyone running Borderlands 2?
