It's been a while since I was talking about this, but was wondering if anyone has had any luck getting an external monitor that CAN RUN 1920X1080
120HZ, to actually run at 120HZ on your Alienware M17X-R3.
I bought the Alienware OptX AW2310 to use on my M17X-R3 with Radeon 6970M to be able to get 1920x1080 120HZ, but after lots of research I find it cannot be done. I can run the 1920x1080, but only at 60HZ via HDMI cable.
The only way is to use a DUAL-LINK-DVI Active adapter, being the laptop does not have a built-in DUAL-LINK-DVI-OUT-PORT.
There a few MINI-Display-Port to DUAL-LINK-DVI adapters on the market, the M17X R3 has a mini-DP-port. The adapters are active and also require to be plugged into a USB PORT for power-only, but these adapters cost $100+.
With this adapter this is supposed to work, but a few months ago I was reading all kinds of mixed reviews about these adapters sometimes working, sometimes not working, sometimes working then breaking, etc etc.
Botton line is I want that 120HZ so BAD, All my life I gamed on 21' CRT monitors 1600x1200 85HZ, I am still having trouble getting used to 60HZ.
It was impossible for me to game at 60HZ on the built in 17 display on the laptop my eyes were burning out.
The larger 23 inch monitor HELPS but still at 60HZ I find after a while my eyes are really bothering me.

UPDATE: Recently have be reading about this new adapter, again its a mini-display-port to DUAL LINK DVI its getting some good reviews.

Should still work fine on a PC. -
Ahh! Further research on this adapter I have found that this adapter DOES NOT SUPPORT 120HZ.
Anyone running external monitor (OptX-AW2310) at 120HZ (using any kind of adapter) on your M17xR3?
