Just wondering if anyone made the switch from laptop (m17x) to desktop? I'm thinking about maybe returning my m17x and making the switch.
advice, comments suggestions welcome

My Advice: Think carefully about why you decided to get a laptop in the first place. Was it to take on your frequent vacations? Perhaps to bring to friend's/relative's houses? Think also about how important it is for you to be able to game on vacation/at friend's houses/at relative's houses. For me, I bought the m17x instead of a desktop because I go on a LOT of vacations/business trips and I always spend a lot of time at my relative's houses. It's always fun to show up the cousins, you know

yea I hear you. I don't ever really move around too much. I've just always had a laptop, so that's what I'm used to.
I've never experienced the power of a desktop, but i was just wondering if there were people here that have done so. -
I was kind of wondering the same thing. Having a 'portable' gaming computer is nice, but there seem to be so many more issues with notebooks rather than desktops, and desktops can have much greater power for lower costs. A fairly spec'd Aurora plus something like an M11x or 13" Macbook pro could cost about the same as a high-end M17x. A single 5970, since it has double the memory (GDDR5 instead of the M17x's GDDR3, too), faster clocks, and no CF-related issues would significantly outperform CF 4870's, right?

I think desktops in general have a longer lifespan than laptops and you get more bang for the buck. But if you need portability, laptop is the way to go. But I must say the m17x is rather large and bulky, and is more like a "desktop" replacement. The new M11x-R2 looks as cute as button. I'm gonna wait to see what goodies Santa brings to the E3 before I pull the trigger on anything.

But in regards to Pdogg, I was thinking about just ordering one of the new desktops, especially the ALX mini. I'm a minimalist and enjoy the size and compactness of laptops. Desktop's are great if you like being in one spot constantly but, I can game in my bed now. Not having to worry about a keyboard, monitor, and mouse is also quite nice.
Transporting a beautiful looking laptop is also satisfying when passer bys oooh and ahhh it. I'm taking it to school next week to show off; say some big names like i7, and crossfire and confuse all the non-techies -
haha BKC. I personally love the m17x. I think it's the most wicked laptop i've ever seen. But I just ordered an alienware aurora desktop, with a 5970 vid card for $2,200. Almost $1k cheaper than my m17x.
we'll see which one i prefer when the desktop gets here. -
M17x is hardly compact and weighs up to 20lbs. Not something I would want to lug around all day. I consider it more a desktop replacement. It's portable but more cumbersome than the smaller and lighter models.

If you never carry it around, laptop is kind of pointless. For one, desktops have far better performances, bigger screen keyboard etc.

Or you can buy a clevo, the D900F or the X7200 lol If your really worried about performance.
-
On Raids I can move to another room and use the 17 inch screen or plug into a hdmi screen. -
-
I see it says you have crossfire enabled...? Is that just because the 5970 is a "dual card"? Or did you somehow get two of them? Because I don't see that as an option on the Dell configuring site..

His score is so epic that the computer had to lie to its self to believe the score.
Anyway, glad you like your desktop. I custom make mine so theres no point in buying a AW desktop, but with laptops I might as well say "F'k it" and go with m17x. Is yours the ALX model? -
