    I'm looking at upgrading to 8gb of RAM (from 4gb) for my m17x R2 now since the price has gone down significantly. However, I'm confused on the different type of DDR3 memory (PC3 10666 vs PC3 10600). So actually which type should I choose? Or it does not matter at all?

    Also, I've narrowed down to the two RAMs. Which one do you personally think is better?

    OCZ $175 - $20 MIR = $155 (9-9-9-20 timing)

    G.Skill $160 (9-9-9-24 timing)

    Everything else are the same on these two memories. I've read in forums that G.Skill has better reputation than OCZ in memory. But OCZ in the presented options is cheaper and has better timing. Which one should I shoot for, folks? :)

    Thanks for your time.

    As far as I understand it the timing will only be as fast as the slowest ram in your PC. Now if your ram has 9-9-9-24 then everything else that is quicker then that will only go as fast 9-9-9-24.

    If your ram has 9-9-9-20 timing then get the OCZ otherwise get the G-skill.

    I could be wrong but I am pretty sure I am right with my limited understanding on how ram works.

    I would go for the OCZ those timings are a bit better and OCZ used to be famous for their RAM.(back in the day)

    He will be replacing both SODIMMS so this is not going to be an issue the OCZ timings are better and not a bad memory module.

    Yeah, I plan on replacing both sticks. I have been using OCZ for my desktop too with no problem. But the number of OCZ rma issues has made me cautious.....

    EtownsFinest, I want two 4gb to make 8gb....so that would be $200 anyway. :)

    Oh man...I'm battling myself here. Half of my brain's telling me that I don't need more than 4gb for Starcraft 2. The other half is reminding me that I want this baby to be a powerful beast (though not necessary). :( I don't know what to do now. Do you guys think the prices will come even lower than this? $150 ?

    Oh man....that's kinda scary. I have heard couple folks having to RMA OCZ on their first purchase also. It seems like G.Skill is the way to go then.

    Skyline.... always get more memory than you think you need if you can afford it. I am now in the same boat needing 8 gig of RAM to work with VMware on my M17x R2, so I was just about to post this same question on the board. Definitely get the 8 gig!

    @Ironbeast

    Those are the frequency ratings for the memory, which is a multiple of the front side bus for the memory. Generally speaking, settings being equal, 1666 is "faster".
