I updated my drivers from that link, now all of my icons are huge, and it won't detect my graphics card anymore. Any help?

It's a well trod trail. That means the installation was partial, the BSOD interrupting the full routine. Restart your R3 tapping the F8 key at the boot screen. Select Disable Driver Signature Enforcement (or words to that effect) and Enter. The computer will boot into Windows using the new Cat 11.10 drivers, but you now have to complete the installation. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder containing the Cat 11.10 driver files (ordinarily c:\ATI\Support\11-10_mobility_vista_win7_64 . . ., but wherever you put them) and double click Setup.exe. Then just follow the normal routine -- Install, Express, etc. and install it all. When finished with the installation, restart. It should start normally, booting into Windows with the Cat 11.10 drivers. Let us know if that fixes it for you.

For me, after I format and reinstall Windows (clean install, not recovery), my procedure is as follows:

    1. Install official Dell ATI drivers (11.8), no problems
    2. Install official ATI (not dell) 11.10 preview 3 drivers, BSOD half way through
    3. Restart computer, run 11.10 preview 3 install again, finishes to completion

After that, everything works fine, not a single BSOD, BF3, MW3, all work fine. Integrated graphics switching works fine too.

If you have time, you can try formatting your laptop and going through steps 1-3 like I did. Its worked twice for me now.

Note that the 11.10 preview 3 drivers were taken from the ATI website, they were not modded in any way.

Prank, the course I suggested is essentially the same as yours, except it is not necessary to reformat and do a clean install of Windows 7. At most, you just need to clean out all prior AMD drivers (Control Panel, Device Manager, Driver Sweeper in safe code and Cclean to clean out the registry), install the Dell drivers and then over-install the reference drivers. As you experienced, you encounter a BSOD more often than not during during installation of the reference drivers over the Dell set. Once installed, later installations of reference drivers proceed smoothly. Therre are many benefits to a clean Win 7 installation, but it is not a prerequisite for driver installation. :)

@Skw4712 - it always works unless your installation is mucked up, if which case you have to clean out all video drivers, install the Dell drivers and then update with the desired AMD reference drivers. There is not a lot of unique or individual configuration involved with video drivers.

Yup, although I would format and start from scratch as a last resort option if nothing else is working :)

I got a better solution to install drivers on a m17x-R3 with the 6990M. Quadzilla told me this method and it can be done without any BSODing. The only downside to this method is your Catalyst Control Center will be a slightly older revision.

I can write a full guide with details later on but the gist is this.

    1. Install these drivers that was originally released for the m17x-R3 and the 6970M. ( Drivers and Downloads).

    2. Install them after removing any drivers you installed on your system (ATI Uninstaller and complete removal of Intel IGP and 6990M drivers via Device Manager). You should install these under the VGA Compatibility mode.

    3. Don't reboot after installation and get the Catalyst 11.10 Drivers (I recommend WHQL).

    4. Unzip the driver package but DON'T run the setup.

    5. Go to Device Manager and right-click on the 6970M option and click on update drivers.

    6. Now select the looking though the list option and then click on I have a disk.

    7. Search for the 11.10 driver though the unzipped folders. They should be located in the packages subfolder.

    8. Let them execute and then select the first 6990M option when requested.

    9. Finish and reboot.

    10. You should be on 11.10 but running on the Dell CCC for Switchables.

I might write a more complete guide later on with screenshots but this works without any BSODS. The 8.851 for the 6990M will cause BSODS in any method, but by using slightly older drivers, the 11.10 driver can be installed without hitches via this method.

I installed the way revelator did, however, I started with the 6970m driver (Dell) to 6990m driver (Dell) to ATI 11.10

Currently I have the highest vantage GPU score @ stock clocks with 13 308, than I had with 11.9 and stock dell drivers.

13 308 is equivalent to a slightly OC'd desktop GTX 460 on vantage.

CCC is from Dell though, and I left AI off.

I used Revelator's method but it only worked once for me. I ended up using Quadzilla's method and it seems to be more stable for me to use. Either way works in the end.

If you go that way, take a look at the 580M too. The system price has dropped, and it is yet another level up in performance. It has its own issues, but power is not one of them.

i forgot about that :p minor problem would be getting rid of current system first. dell is gonna hopefully replace the screen and media strip up at the top, then i might put it on Craigslist. Any idea how much i should maybe sell for this thing for?

hmm nvidia or AMD, its $1879 for the 6990m or $1954 for the 580m.

    Both are very comparable.

i've been with Nvidia for a while, this time I just had to see what Ati is all about.

    Here's a review,
    http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphi...mparison-GeForce-GTX-580M-and-Radeon-HD-6990M

notice the 580m M17x has a much stronger CPU than the 6990m M17x. BF3 is a very cpu intensive game, and I think the 6990m lost pretty badly because of that.

The 580M is faster in my R3. I have had it for only a short time and have done very limited benching, but first efforts resulted in 3dMark11 -- P4820; 3dMark Vantage -- P18,870 (this should increase to ~P20K with more focus); and 3dMark06 -- 25,832. I could not get close to those scores with my 6990M. My 6990M was a sorry example of the breed, but I haven't seen any other 6990M's performing at those levels either.

No, I bought it privately from forum member ValkerieFire, who bought it from Dell.

Of course. I am still learning how to deal with throttling but techniques are evolving that allow users to avoid it altogether or to minimize its impact. It's a continuing process, but throttling is less intrusive than I originally feared.

I think my R3 is going to stay as it is because it's going to be handed down to my wife in a few months, but i'm very envious of your ugprades :D

Both are good cards, the cream of the mobile crop, and each has its pros and cons. My last four cards were from ATI/AMD in several different notebooks -- 5870M, 5850M, 6970M and 6990M, so I've been an ATI fanboy for a while. But now that prices are nearly equal, the power and features of the 580M give it the edge for my purposes. That may all change again when AMD releases the 7900M Series.

i'll be upgrading my laptop as soon as the 7900's show up...

but i hear the 7800's are coming first and they will just be a slight increase over the 6900's

We'll see how things go as the wife is pressuring me to get a new laptop as her Asus g73 isn't cutting it anymore. I get a new one and she gets my old one. That's the progression in my house lol...but my old laptops are pretty much new and powerful

The 7900's is when things get interesting: I like innovation and the use of XDR2 Ram is innovative. Nvidia will probably have to follow suit but ATI will be first to market

lol im just sick of my 460m. I'm not exactly a nvidia fan-boy, But i've gotten used to how they work software wise and everything. With the 580m so cheap this machine might be going bye bye very soon in return for one with a 580m and a 1080p screen :D
