Hey guys, I recently bought a m17x-r2 with duel 5870's and a nice 920 xm cpu. I am not sure if this is normal but I always hear a good amount of fan noise coming from it, not so much that it is running 110 percent but a good prominent noise. So anwyays I decided to make sure everything was going good with this puppy and ran 3dmark06 but got a very low score, so I updated my gpu bios and drivers to no avail. I get a score of around 3800 where the normal score I bleive is supposed to be well over 12,000. I decided to get a temperature moitoring program and it showed that my temp of both the main gpu and cpu had reached around 100 degrees while the secondary gpu didnt go anywhere near that high. I am not sure if this is the reason why my laptop scored so low, but any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

Couple things to check. Is crossfire showing enabled? Those temps are very high for the CPU and GPU so might need to be repasted or the dust might need to be cleaned out. Just a couple of things to look into and try. I'm concerned that if the temps on the secondary card aren't increasing that it simply might not be using it. Which could account for the low scores as well. Definitely verify that crossfire is enabled in your AMD Catalyst. Good luck!

Loads of Alienware (and not only) users tend to sell their machines because they think something is broken, where all it needs is to remove fluf from the GPU/CPU grill and a proper repaste.
After this it will be good as new. Remember to remove C- clips, they are a pain, even when you do a proper repaste, they will not allow the heatsink to properly sit on the DIE of the GPU.

    good luck

True, you may want to repaste GPU/CPU and get that beast up and running.

Yeah that's a pretty hot idle temp for sure. Definitely sounds like a good repaste and a good clean out is just the thing. May be that the card(s) are throttling due to the temps, so hopefully once everything is cleaned out it'll be running like a champ!
