My has been re-pasted with AS5 and screws re-adjusted: idle around 33 to 35 Celcius.

stock mine idles around 44C(nothing has been re-pasted or anything. never been taken apart), but during long periods of gaming it reaches high 90's and even core 3 reaches 100C (which is the point at which it starts throttling to save the chip)

Mine idles around 44c and when pushed (no O/C) get around 66c. Might re-paste down the track but not opening my new m17x just yet :)

    ^This can't be right for a 940XM.

I get the same as most people posted at stock. Idle 40-45, load mid 80's. Overlcocked it hits the ninties, but I have Throttlestop set to change profiles at 92*C.

I have posted my results in another thread. My CPU is 940XM.
Ran Prime95 for about an hour (with 5% OC in BIOS and a fresh reboot because current BIOS will not retain 5% OC if computer is put to sleep and wake up) loading all 4 cores (8 threads) and all 4 cores are between 74 to 77 Celcius. This is done with no external cooling help. All I did was raised the back about half an inch. Normal gaming, the hottest my CPU ever get was around 65 (most of the times around in the 50s) Celcius.

i would like to concur that rasing the back of the laptop up a little bit makes a BIG difference. i put it up on a DVD case, and i never go above 85C.

I don't like the extra noise and height laptop coolers provide so I have been using this:

Amazon.com: Helix Magnifying Ruler - Magnifying Ruler, 12: Office Products

for many years. The laptops I have owned up to now did not benefit enough from laptop coolers to warrant me to use one. I bought mine at a local Walmart many years ago and it either sits under the back of my laptop or in the bag with me.

I confirm this too, specially for the GPUs

I put it on a cheap small plastic laptop stand that has adjustable hight, it holds the laptop right from the upper center and leaves the sides hanging (because the stand is small for smaller laptops) and the gpu fans would be free and have a alot of air around it and beneath it without obstacles.

GPU temp goes around 84 while on load, .. while before when it was on a flat wooden surface, it used to go 90s.

no re-paste or cooling mod done, all stock clocks

raising the back of the laptop is the biggest bang for the buck cooling mod out there... :p

the little rubber nubbins are all ripped off the bottom of my m17x - just sliding in and out of the backpack did this alienware says they won't replace them since they're "cosmetic" and would require a complete teardown of the laptop - even though I have advanced warranty (complete care replacement). i gave up arguing for the time being and got these:

DealExtreme: $2.47 Stainless Steel Laptop/Notebook Docking Stand - Silver

$2.50 shipped. they work great and are the second best bang for the buck cooling mod...
